Cheney: Critics 'Dead Wrong' on Afghan Campaign
Yahoo News ^ | November 14 | Charles Aldinger

By Charles Aldinger

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) fired a broadside at critics of the U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan (news - web sites) on Wednesday, saying they had been ``dead wrong'' in sniping at the pace of a 39-day bombing against the Taliban.

Boasting that the Taliban were in flight ``virtually all over the country,'' he chided analysts who accused the Pentagon (news - web sites) of not dropping more bombs or putting more troops into Afghanistan.

``It's nice, at a moment like this, to be able to remind them (critics) that a lot of what they put out over the course of the last few weeks was just dead wrong,'' Cheney told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (news - web sites) in a speech.

He was not specific about the critics but said it included military pundits, the Washington press and ``talking heads'' on television.

Praising Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff, the vice president said that ''we've got some great people running the operation. And the results are there for all to see.''

Cheney cautioned that the war was far from over in Afghanistan despite the collapse in many areas of military forces of the fundamentalist Muslim Taliban, who have ruled the country for five years.

``This is a very good beginning to what's likely to be a long struggle,'' he said.

``They (the Taliban) have lost their control over a major part of Afghanistan. They've lost control of most of the cities. Many of their forces have been killed, captured or fled to the hills,'' he said.

But in another apparent jab at critics, he noted that President Bush (news - web sites) had vowed to end support by the Taliban and other countries worldwide for ``terrorist'' networks such as al Qaeda guerrillas of fugitive Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), accused of masterminding Sept. 11 attacks on America.

``I think this morning, in the fate that has befallen the Taliban, there is proof positive,'' the vice president said.

``If anybody has any questions about whether or not we're determined to carry through on that threat, all they have to do is go visit Afghanistan today and interview members of the Taliban -- if they can find any.''

I first saw Cheney's coolness in action in his debate with whiny Joe Lieberman.

I feel blessed to be alive at this time when America is experiencing GOOD GOVERNMENT!!

personally, I'd be happier if the VP wasn't as concerned as he seems to be with proving the media critics and others like them wrong.

CR posted, "Oh good, I was hoping someone would mention Billy Kristol! Cheney didn't have to name names.......WE KNOW!"

Kristol is so pitiful and predictable. He has his head up McAinal 24/7, except when, he comes out to write one of his out rageously funny opeds trying to tell GW how to do something. Kristol is farther out of the White House loop than the planet Juniper!

Sobran, Novacks and of course the lying sack of golly Hersch of the Slimes are 3 more Mediot whores who have made themselves look like village idiots since 9/11!

What they and the other losers in the food chain fail to realize is that GW nevers listens to the losers in life! He does what is right and gets advice from winners who want to win!

Why are you unhappy with Cheney?

If the media project naysaying in regards to America's efforts, they encourage the enemy and prolong the war.

This just goes to show what can happen when officials are selected based on their qualifications and experience instead of their politics.

But if OBL is our chief target why is so little said about him? It appears he may be a secondary target at this point.

I never knew that OBL was our chief target. President Bush said our commitment and goal was to "ELIMINATE" terrorism, no matter where it may be, and that this WAR would be different..it would take many shapes and forms, unlike other wars.

I personally care not about OBL as long as he has no power, people or weapons to do his dirty work. Our goal is to keep our country safe and secure from TERRORISTS, inside and outside of our country, even if it takes 10 years or longer.

""Noting" would have been less pejorative than "Boasting".

The exact word I "used". A former journalist, I automatically rewrite liberal prose - especially the leads. It just begs for rewriting - :^)

If you don't like Buchanan, so be it...But you want to start
calling Buchanan supporters unpatriotic, you are not only
dishonest but you will have a fight...

Pat Bucanan is the only politician I have ever given money to.
And I agree with him on 90% of his issues, but that can not
let me agree with his position on Israel. He has disappointed
me greatly, by revealing his true anti-semetic leanings.

This brings out the obvious danger of supporting someone
whom you agree with 90% of the time, the devil is in the 10%.

The only thing worse than the media talking heads who think they are experts on war stategy are the ex-generals who come out of the woodwork (for cash I'm sure) and pretend that they still know what's going on. At least the media have an excuse--they are idiots. The retired generals should know better--they've been there.

Hey, no one in the media has brought up Cheney's health in two months. I give that a week after complete victory in Afghanistan for the media to ask Cheney about his health.

Cheney was only stating the obvious, but it needed stating.

The liberal media, the pundits and the McCains have been wrong on most of the things that happened in our operation in Afghanistan and I see no reason why they should not be held accountable for those inaccuracies by Cheney or anyone else in the administration. They've earned the spanking and Dick Cheney is just the man to give it to them.

On ABC radio today the announcer said that the Taliban would not turn over binLadin and Cheney was quoted as saying that they (Taleban) are just as responsible for Osamas crimes and they are now facing the "the wrath of the American people." I LOVE IT!!! Yes WRATH is the perfect word!!!

However, I do see one weak link in this administration ... the Secretary of Transportation. Just can't remember his name. IMO, he needs to be replaced.

Mineta? Wasn't he supposed to be a "peace offering" to the inept other side, by Bush. Just goes to show that Bush should have told them to go to hell & picked his own man for the job, in the beginning. The dummydRATs just don't hack it. He'll eventually have to replace him anyway, you know, Mineta will camouflage it by saying he's stepping down so he can spend more time with his family. Yeah, Right!

I am wondering if Karl Rove has been put in charge of a secondary front....neutralizing the fifth column pundits and press (including McCain).

McCain has been on every show whining about ground troops, carping about the scale of the war, and generally being a horse's a@@. We KNOW that the possuum-person, Kristol, has nothing on his agenda except the destruction of this administration.

Using my Miss Marple divining powers, I sense that the Cheney speech is the opening salvo in a prolonged campaign to neutralize these annoying and divisive people. I look forward to comments in the days ahead.

Andrew Sullivan is taking nominations for pundits who were most wrong about this war. HA! I bet he reads stuff here!!
