No one WANTS this to be a terrorist attack, MHGEh, I'd strongly disagree..but the key is people SUBCONSCIOUSLY want it to be a terrorist attack, because it's actually less frightening than if it was mechanical failure.
People desperately crave order, meaning, and purpose....and despise randomness and chance. This is what drives most conpsiracy nuttery...when bad things happen, it's actually MORE comforting to believe they are the result of a vast organized conspiracy, or of deliberate acts of people, than that they are the result of a few people, or of natural causes or a sequence of rare mechanical failures, etc.
It's more comforting to believe JFK or MLK were the victims of large conspiracies than lone random nuts..it gives the deaths of each more purpose, more meaning, and less randomness. It's more comforting, in a strange, subconscious way to believe TWA 800 was shot down by the Navy and then covered up (as strange as it sounds) than that it was the result of an unusual mechanical failure.

Explosion.

This is a new kind of enemy. Think about it. During WWII or any previous war, if a plane crashed it would never have crossed our minds that it was an act of war. With this war today no matter what happens we immediately think it's an act of terrorism. So, what it the answer, folks? I do know that our borders weren't wide open during previous wars.

It is funny to hear the talking heads report that the officials say there was no warning about terrorist activity so this must not be a terrorist eventI think I just heard Jennings say that it is a comfort that at least it was not a terrorist attack. How's that for speculation?!

exactly. This is why the enemy may stay mum about this. Nothing like doubt and uncertainty to bring down the mighty.

No, abc-radio eyewitness said engine fell off, after explosion right where wing meets fuselage. She didn't say the wing fell off. She had a really good view. But as John Nance said, 6 people could see the same incident and report 6 different things.

It is funny to hear the talking heads report that the officials say there was no warning about terrorist activity so this must not be a terrorist event. Did they say the same thing after the FIRST plane crash into the WTC. It's the professional modus-operandi: Things are done the old formal scientific way, you don't jump to the motive or conclusion before you've even assessed the evidence. No one's assessed the evidence. This same thing will be said at the outset of every single event that occurs for any reason.
No one has had time yet to determine the reason for the crash because no one has analyzed the physical evidence. You want to shorten your career in any field: Jump to conclusions. No one who has professional responsibility is going to do that.
That's what forums like this are for! My bet (so far) is with the barometric bomb in the luggage theory...(see, I'm really not a hoity-toity)...

You are amazed by the number of people who "want"(!) this to be a terror attack?
Respectfully, wishful thinking has nothing to do with the possibilities of attack.
Denial is not always the best coping mechanism.

fbi says explosion on board
To: madfly
You don't SERIOUSLY think that would-be terrorists would come to FR to learn the exact amount of C4 required to take down a jet, do you? Can't you think of ANY other way they would get that info?
Please.

CNN reporting expert that claims airbus is designed to continue flying ability if engine falls off. It would be very difficult to overstress plane to cause crash, even with engine having fallen off.

NEW YORK (AP) -- An American Airlines jetliner on its way to the Dominican Republic with 255 people aboard crashed moments after takeoff from Kennedy Airport in a residential neighborhood Monday, setting homes on fire. There was no immediate word on the number of deaths or injuries.
Bush administration officials said the FBI believed there was an explosion aboard the plane, and was investigating whether it was the result of a mechanical failure or sabotage.
