How many times does it need to be said? This all comes back to oil. If we were self-sufficient energy-wise, we could have already bombed Mecca in retaliation and been done with it (Actually, just the threat of that would have prevented WTC from even happening). But then again, if we produced all our own oil, we wouldn't be crawling all over the Middle East and arousing the isane fury of the Ben Ladens of the world. We wouldn't have to station our military in Arabia to keep Hussein in check, we never would have had to engage Hussein to begin with. But since we get so much oil from the Saudi's, they are our FRIENDS (even though thats where Ben Laden's financing comes from).
But try to drill for oil in the MOST REMOTE AND FORBIDDING PLACE ON THE ENTIRE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT (ANWR), and Democrats and the mentally ill environmental lobby goes into paroxysms of irrational indignation.
Everybody should check out Jonah Goldberg's feature report from ANWR in National Review (it might have been only in the print version, I don't know). It really exposes the idiocy of people who don't want drilling there (Note - its not the closest eskimo tribe - They WANT it. They LOBBIED for it. The G'witchen are several hundred miles away and are sore because they DIDN'T get drilling on THEIR land.)
Without our oil purchases, the Arabs will wither away..
