As the World Trade Center imploded just blocks from where she stood, former first daughter Chelsea Clinton's first fears included the prospect that President Bush's economic program would stymie any rebuilding effort.
"I was worried that with the tax cut we wouldn't have enough money to repair New York and D.C. and to help the families of the thousands I knew must have died," writes the former first daughter in an up close and personal account of the Sept. 11 disaster set to appear in the December issue of Talk Magazine.
Clinton claims she was all alone in nearby Union Square and unable to reach her parents by phone as the disaster unfolded before her eyes.
"We all thought we were literally going to have fire rain down on us. That we were the next target," the former first daughter reveals.
"I truly thought I was going to die," Clinton claims she was thinking, just before she began worrying about the impact of the Bush economic program.
The disaster has rallied young Clinton's civic-minded spirit, and she uses her Talk Magazine screed to rally her generation to public service. "We need to step up and serve in any way we can," Chelsea urges.
Her own war effort, however, will apparently be limited to following the footsteps of her father, who dodged the Vietnam draft from the safety of England's Oxford University.
News that the Bush tax cuts were among Ms. Clinton's earliest concerns on 9/11 follows on the heels of a speech by ex-President Clinton Wednesday that seemed to blame the terrorist attacks on American slavery and the mistreatment of the Indians.
And why was this 21 yr old kid asked to write her story for a magazine? It's certainly not because it was an interesting story, or even a truthful one. It's not because she was a heroine that day. It's because she's a Clinton, and if she can use her name to get an article in a magazine, we have every right to criticize her.
That pretty much can be said about any post on this board!
Now wait a minute. I'm confused. Earlier today I read something written by Chelsea in which she stated that when the attack happened, she was "staring senselessly at the television" in a friend's apartment. Which was it? Was she senselessly watching it unfold on TV in a friend's apartment or was she standing nearby, almost killed by fire raining down around her?
Furthermore, I seriously doubt that if she was standing nearby, almost killed by debris, that she would have been thinking about Bush's tax cut at that moment.
She's definitely earning the moron vote.
Must be genetic.
I think this part of the story refers to when Chelsea was "expounding" on the evilness of Bush's tax cuts just as people were fleeing Grand Central Station, which was later in the day (if you believe Chelsea's Amazing Journey, she went from Union Square to the towers, then walked the opposite way to Grand Central Station.) Because people yelled supposedly yelled "fire" while fleeing Grand Central, she was convinced that fire was going to rain down upon her.
Of course, this story she tells completely ignores her mother's lie that she was jogging by the towers, and went for a cup of coffee (or maybe it was drinking coffee while jogging -- they've told so many stories it's hard to keep track!)
