The details are sketchy. Apparently a road crew working on one of the streets in boston discovered a secret "room" under the street. It is part of a network of caves and caverns. It looks very old. Meaning centuries. The origin and the purpose is a mystery.

Found it! I knew I'd seen it in the paper today. There's an AP photo out there, but I can't seem to locate it. Anyway, here's the link to the story: <A HREF="http://www.telegram.com/news/page_one/tunnel.html>Tunnel Story</A>

Ok, we believe you. The Alice thing was too easy.
Maybe they'll find Chandra in there.

Sorry. It's just that the first thing that I thought of was H.P. Lovecraft. Interesting thread.

Dukakis shoulda stuck Will Horton down there and then flooded it.

Meaning centuries. The origin and the purpose is a mystery. IIRC, a rather large network of secret tunnels came to late after the San Francisco quake. Unfortunately, I no longer have the book Darkest Hours where I remember having read about that, so I can't look it up.

Perhaps they will find out what happened to poor old Charlie, the man who was lost on the MTA. Possibly someone could post the story of that horrible example of the outrageous treatment of the citizens of Boston by their government.

...you mean they really found it? Now what am I going to do.
Please be quiet about the subway thing. I was just getting comfortable.

In the late 1700's to mid 1800's a number of New England communities built undergound rooms(some quite large) to store dead bodies in the winter months as they did not attempt burials when the ground was frozen. Often these holding tombs were built into the side of a hill, but some were underground, with a steel door entrance in a brick or stone and mortar building and then a ramp down into the tombs.
I believe the municipal cemetery in the City Of Worcester ( a short distance from Millbury) has two large underground tombs built into a steep hillside that were able to hold a few hundred caskets.
There is a good possibility that the underground caverns in Millbury were built for a similar purpose and were abandoned when all year burials started (with the advent of the backhoe and jackhammer to break out frozen ground).
Do you know if there is a cemetery nearby the location of the cavern?

Cthulu. It's gotta be related to the Cthulu Mythos. Right! Secret cellars in Boston, eldritch stinks, carboys of vitriol, the maddening song of the whippoorwill....

There's an entire library wing devoted to it at Miskatonic University. They keep a copy of "In the Vault" under lock and key.

This cavern is in Millbury, Massachusetts, about 40 miles west of Boston.
