Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the crucial Supreme Court decision, the one that really put the nail in Gore's coffin, a 7-2 vote?

Perhaps the reason that the Supreme Court hasn't suffered in its reputation is because people can see that it was a very reasonable decision. But you can't blame the media for not trying to convince people otherwise.

Yes, and in true Orwellian style, I'd wager that fewer than 30% of the American public realizes this a year later...it's gone down the Memory Hole. Moreover, the TRUE divided court was the FL Supreme Soviet, which issued a bitterly divided 4-3 ruling to keep Gore's hopes alive...including a brilliant, stinging dissent from Chief Justice Wells who, to that point, had sided with the Gore camp.

Finally, the standard issue "Bush won by 1 vote" blather assumes that...if Bush lost in the Supreme Court, then Gore would have won the election. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every stupid media analysis of the ballots we've seen shows that Bush would've won unless you count (1) ballots that were backed over by trucks and (2) DNC business cards with the inscription "I vote for Gore" on the back.
