You Worry Me
Hyattsville letter

Posted on 11/04/2001 10:18:19 PM PST by hawaiian

The following letter was published in the Gazette, Hyattsville, MD, October 11, 2001, on the Community Forum page.

"You worry me. I wish you didn't. I wish when I walked down the streets of this country that I love, that your color and culture still blended with the beautiful human landscape we enjoy in this country. But you don't blend anymore. I notice you, and it worries me.

"I notice you because I can't help it anymore. People from your homelands, and professing to be Muslims, have been attacking and killing my fellow citizens and our friends for more than 20 years now. I don't fully understand their grievances and hate but I know nothing can justify the inhumanity of their attacks.

On Sept. 11, nineteen Arab-Muslims hijacked four jetliners in my country. They cut the throats of women in front of children and brutally stabbed to death others. They took control of those planes and crashed them into buildings killing thousands of proud fathers, loving sons, wise grandparents, elegant daughters, best friends, favorite coaches, fearless public servants and children's mothers. So I notice you now.

I don't want to be worried. I don't want to be consumed by the same rage and hate and prejudice that have destroyed the soul of these terrorists. But I need your help.

As a rational American, trying to protect my country and family in an irrational and unsafe world, I must know how to differentiate between you. How do I differentiate between the true Arab-Muslim-Americans and the Arab-Muslims in our communities who are attending our schools, enjoying our parks, ... [edited for brevity]... while they plot the next attack that will slaughter those very same good neighbors and children? The answer to my own questions that it is past the time for me to try to determine this. The events of Sept. 11th changed the answer. It is time for every Arab-Muslim in this country to determine it for me.

I want to know, I demand to know, if you love America. Do you pledge allegiance to its flag? Do you pray in your many daily prayers that Allah will bless this nation that He will protect and prosper it? Are you thankful for the freedom that only this nation affords? A freedom that was paid for by the blood of hundreds of thousands of patriots? Are you willing to preserve this freedom with the spilling of your own blood? Do you love America? And if this is your commitment, then I need you to start letting me know about it.

Your Muslim leaders in this nation should be flooding the media at this time with hard facts on your faith, and what hard actions you are taking as a community and religion to protect the United States of America. Please, no more benign overtures of regret for the death of the "innocent" (I worry who you regard as "innocent") and condemnation of "unprovoked" attacks (I worry what is "unprovoked" to you.) I am not interested in any more sympathy; I am interested only in action. What will you do for America-- the country -- at this time of crisis, at this time of war?

I want to see Arab-Muslims waving the flag in the streets. I want to hear you chanting "Allah Bless America." I want to see Arab-Muslim young men enlisting in the military. I want to see a commitment of money and time and emotion to the victims of this butchering and to this nation as a whole.

The FBI has a list of over 400 people they want to talk to regarding the WTC attack. Many of these people live and socialize in Muslim communities. You know them. You know where they are. Deliver them up, now. But I have seen little even approaching this sort of action. Instead I have seen an already closed and secretive community close even tighter. You have disappeared from the streets. You have posted armed security guards at your facilities. You have threatened lawsuits. You have screamed for protection from reprisal.

The few Arab-Muslim representatives that have appeared on the media are defensive and equivocating. They seem more concerned with making sure the U.S. prove who is responsible before they act, and protecting their own people from any violence directed toward them, here in the U.S. and abroad.

If the true teachings of Islam proclaim tolerance and peace and love for all people, then I want chapter and verse from the Koran and statements from popular Muslim leaders to back it up.

Because even if the teachings in the Koran are good and pure and true, it matters little if large numbers of current Islamic practitioners interpret the teachings of Mohammed incorrectly and adhere to a degenerative form of the religion.

I want to know where every Arab-Muslim in this country stands and I think it is within my right and the right of every true citizen of this country to demand it. A right paid for by the blood of thousands of my brothers and sisters.

I am pleading with you to let me know. I want you here; as my brother, my neighbor, my friend, as a fellow American. But there can be no "gray" areas or ambivalence regarding your allegiance and it is up to you to show me where you stand.

Until then...you worry me."

You would find out what 'racist' and 'intolerant' really means if you lived under your friends.

I saw an interview with the leader of the Mosque nearest WTC right after the attack. This was in the first 24 hours after the attack, when the possibility of 50,000 deaths was still large. The only thing this scumbag expressed concern about was that he hoped the perpetrators weren't Muslim because otherwise it will be "hard on Muslims in America". The scumbag did not say word one about the possible death of 50,000 Americans, only about how the event might inconvenience him and his scumbag friends. The interview was on 60 Minutes, if you want to check it out for yourself. An amazing amazing testament to the heartlessness and cruelty of those who follow this gutter religion called Islam.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof with the sole exception being that Islam is declared to be an evil cult, and unlawful; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

My vote: YES

Germany outlawed Scientology. We can outlaw Islam.

You REALLY Worry Me

You worry me. I wish you didn't.

Your hatred worries me. I wish that when I walked down the streets of this country that I love and I saw you walking, that I didn't have to worry about who you are blaming today. That I didn't have to worry that when the face of evil attacked our country on Sept 11, you just used it as an excuse to dust off your old prejudices, and promote your political views.

So I notice you now. At a time when we should be supporting the white, black, and brown fire fighters and policemen who gave their lives in the rubble of the WTC, I notice more racial slurs. At a time when we should be supporting both the military and humanitarian aims of our soldiers, I notice folks who oppose the food drops. At a time when we should be joining hands with all the Muslims around the world who have prayed for our families and expressed their support for us, I notice people screaming for the destruction of whole nations full of people who had nothing to do with Osama's gang of murderers.

I notice folks who pretend to be real Americans stating that they don't care how many innocent Afghani civilians are killed in the war, even though most Afghanis don't support the Taliban and still don't even know what happened on Sept 11.

I notice people who pretend to be Bible followers stating that it doesn't matter who gets killed as long as our country gets its revenge.

I notice folks on the Internet who pretend to be patriots exploiting the terror we've experienced - using it to promote their extremist political hatreds by blaming ex-Presidents for the attacks, by encouraging us to dissociate with anyone whose culture or skin color is different from our own, by trying to destroy the first amendment freedoms that make our country so unique.

I wish I knew that you believe in unity, and in this shining city on a hill that is our nation, in this beautiful melting pot of different cultures, and in the ideals that made our country great.

But I'm afraid that isn't always true for you. That you believe the only good American is a white American. That it's okay to ram pickup trucks through the walls of mosques in U.S. cities, or to perform cowardly acts like gathering with your racist friends to beat some Arab American to death. That we shouldn't admit to the truth, that we've made mistakes in the past. I worry that you don't have the courage to act like a real American, to stand up for people who look different than you, to protect the defenseless from angry, anti-American, militia mobs.

I don't want to be worried. I don't want to be consumed by the same rage, hate and prejudice that destroyed the hearts of these Arab terrorists and their American brothers, the murderous militia nuts who want to organize and wipe out their own government, or who want to kill anyone who "betrays their race" by marrying someone of a different color. But I need your help.

I want to know, I demand to know, if you love America. Do you recite the pledge of allegiance? Do you believe in the words "liberty and justice for all," meaning everyone, whether you originally came to America from Ireland, Germany, Israel, Palestine, Africa, Asia, Mexico or Saudi Arabia? Do you believe in the God of "one nation under?" Do you understand that our God loves starving Afghani children as much as He loves American children, or anyone else He created?

Then it's time for you to stand up.

When you hear someone using racial slurs to describe Arabs, it's time to stand up and say that millions of Americans have died for the principle of equality.

When you hear someone tell you that it doesn't matter how many innocent Afghanis are killed, it's time to stand up and say, "We don't sink to the level of terrorist animals. We don't kill innocent people. We're Americans."

When you see elected officials taking away our civil liberties in the name of "security," it's time to stand up and remind them that countless Americans have shed their blood to live in a free society.

When you hear someone using this tragedy as an excuse to bash Clinton OR Bush, or to further some Far Right political aims, or to stir up hatred toward loyal Americans of any ethnicity, it's time to stand up and tell them we believe in unity, and their ignorance is not welcome here.

When you hear some lunatic screaming that anyone who criticizes anything America has ever done is a traitor, it's time to stand up and say that our forefathers died for the right of free speech, and that America is strong BECAUSE we can air our differences, BECAUSE we accept the truth about our past mistakes and then correct them, BECAUSE we are free.

Until then, you worry me.

I notice that most of what you say is a crock of shit.

Even the Bible makes note that war sometimes is necessary. There are plenty of wars in the Bible. Killing the enemy in times of war, is not against Christianity.

Further, wanting to put away the radical Islamics who are in our country, illegally, with the intent of doing us harm (Jihad!) is not wishing for a lilly white country.

No, Mr. ReasonedVoice, you come here basically touting the same mischaracterizations that the left loves to make about conservatives, and you claim we worry you.

We should, because we are on to you, and the country is starting to see that we are right.

There is one home for bigotry and hatred in this country, and it resides on the left.

People like you used to worry me, because I was afraid that your lies would stick.

You worry me no longer.

Thanks for your reply, Hugh. You're a pretty bright guy; I can tell by your descriptive analysis contained in the term, "crock of shit."

Apparently, most of the country agrees with me, not you, since the majority of people voted for Gore, whether you consider a Florida recount or not. But I'm willing to move forward from there.

First of all, let's examine your Biblical analysis. Have you read the Bible? I have. The defining text for Christianity is the New Testament, not the Old (Jesus was very clear on this point, stating "I am the Law" and "The whole of the Law is summed up in these two commandments: Love God with all of your heart, body and soul, and treat your neighbor as you would be treated." Now in the New Testament, we are not given permission in any way, shape or form to "kill the enemy in war." War is not even mentioned in the New Testament. Instead, Jesus gives very specific instructions on how to handle a conflict (He is very clear, if you actually read Him): "If someone strikes your cheek, offer him the other as well." Obviously, there are cases where war is the logical course of action (as when hunting down Al-Qaida for example). But Christianity does not confer a blessing on this, and we are definitely not given permission by God to kill innocent civilians who had nothing to do with 9/11, which was my point in the first place.

Regarding bigotry and prejudice, which Leftist organizations are you referring to? Let's see, the Freemen and certain militias believe that only whites should have citizenship, but they vote Republican, don't they? Are you referring to the White Supremacists? No, they hate Liberal Democrats, just as you do. Oh, I know, you're talking about David Duke, former KKK member and Dem...no wait, he's a Republican too. Hmmm... I'll keep trying. You also refer to the "lies" in my piece. One thing I find interesting is that when I debate with my conservative friends, they like to use blanket statements about Liberal lies, but they rarely can identify any. Which "lies" are you objecting to? The one about the importance of the First Amendment? The one about how loyal Americans have died for the cause of equality and a free society? The one about how folks who gang up on and beat Americans who have a different skin color are anti-American cowards? Or the one about how God loves equally all people of all nations? You don't need to worry about lies, Hugh. They'll be discovered eventually.

Part of intelligence is knowing the appropriate term to use, even if the verbage might not be full of William F. Buckley terms.

Apparently, most of the country agrees with me, not you, since the majority of people voted for Gore, whether you consider a Florida recount or not. But I'm willing to move forward from there.
A smart person such as yourself would realize a few things, such as the fact that about half of the country did not vote, so you have no way of ascertaining if most of the country agrees with you. Considering how heavy the black turnout was last November, however, and considering how heavy the urban turnout was last November, I think it is reasonable to conclude that of those who did not vote, those who would have voted Gore were outnumbered by those who would have voted Bush.

However, since polls show that 89 percent of the country now is pretty glad that Bush is the President, I think I am on safe ground saying that more of the country agrees with me now than agrees with you.

As for your unwillingness to move on from Florida, who cares what you think? I am perfectly content with you trying to hold on to that mindless sentiment. It will do you no good, and I encourage you to advocate for your candidates next election based on your Florida opinion.

War is not even mentioned in the New Testament.
Not in so many words. However, we have...
Luke 3:14 And the soldiers (they evidently were part of an army) likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
I do believe He meant civilians at the "no man" comment, not other military combatants. Any person considering military service should search the scriptures.

Instead, Jesus gives very specific instructions on how to handle a conflict (He is very clear, if you actually read Him): "If someone strikes your cheek, offer him the other as well."
Matthew 5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Luke 6:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.
IMO this was an admonition of passive defiance and to not seek retaliation for purely spiteful "personal physical and/or property injuries" by brigands or other persons, even those in positions of authority, while yet looking the malefactor squarely in the eyes.
"Here, have my coat also, as I surely know that the Lord shall render us both our just recompense in due season."

I seem to recall in Matthew 14, Jesus talking about what a wise king does before going to war, and it wasn't precisely for the king to avoid the war. It was that the king would ensure that he would be able to vanquish the enemy.

You may also want to consider Hebrews 11:32-34:

And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,
who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,
quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.
I love when liberals try to debate the Bible.

Militias are bigoted or prejudiced? Where do you get that from?

White Supremecists? Go to the website of Aryan Action and read what they are for- it is lockstep with your typical leftist socialist. David Duke? You won't find him applauded here, but you will find him advocated on Overthrow.com, which is run by far-left rabble-rouser Bill White, who happens to be an employee of Pravda and a communist to the bone.

If you claim to be pro-1st amendment, then we are in agreement. If you want to say that liberals are and conservatives aren't, then you are putting forth a lie. If you talk about Americans dying for the cause of liberty, I will join you in saluting them. If you claim that the left has been respectful of them or has been more involved in actually taking part in such actions than conservatives, then you are putting forth a lie. If you say that conservatives want to keep the black man down, then you are putting forth yet another lie. If you say that the statistics show gun control works, then you are putting forth another lie. As a matter of fact, the entire liberal agenda nowadays is built upon a series of lies.

You don't need to worry about lies, Hugh. They'll be discovered eventually.
Indeed. Despite the left's desire to keep them going.
