PARIS (Reuters) - Nearly half the French public believes the four-week-old U.S. military action in Afghanistan is failing, a poll released Sunday showed.

The survey by pollsters Ipsos for the Journal du Dimanche weekly showed 47 percent thought the campaign was failing, with just 17 percent confident of success.

The remainder of the 969-head sample, interviewed on November 2, gave no response or said the outlook was unclear. No definition for what constituted success or failure was given.

"through all of the twists and turns of their history, the French have managed to maintain a recognisably French culture and French way of living. Has The Last Remaining Superpower On Earth managed to do that--for all our wealth and military might?"

No, we've been able to maintain NUMEROUS types of culture, all of which are distinctly American. I'd say that Southern, Western and Urban cultures are all unique and yet as American as can be. There are also subcultures present here that are too numerous to mention, and that are emulated around the world.

The French can keep the snails and frog's legs.

Lol. I recently picked up a copy of that book in Boston (when was it published again; late 60s?). It is rather fun, but remember, written by an Italian....

"The French political consensus is broadly in favor of military action, although left-wingers in Prime Minister Lionel Jospin's ruling coalition have raised increasing concerns over civilian casualties."

Well, in all fairness, I believe the French are relatively backing the US in this little war we have going on. But it amazes me that a country like France, and the people that live there, can be so....well....pacifist....after the recent turn of world events.

"With no clear victories to point to yet,"

And the smelly hairy cheese eaters would know this from which DOD briefing? These people are so irrelevant, I don't why you posted this.

Could the fact that both France and the USA are countries born out of a revolution have anything to do with it? Or that French political thought was implemented better in the US then in France itself?

"...otherwise you would be speaking German,if you lived long enough to learn it.)..."

A typically bumper-sticker view of modern history. And we wonder why the French are so "snotty".

By the way, do you have some objection to speaking foreign languages?

Ah, cher--you forget the uniquely American FRENCH culture, Louisiana Cajuns. And they are also better cooks than the continental French, to boot!

LOL. Deep frying a turkey takes not only skill, but guts as well. Probably why it never caught on in France.

My rudeness was learned first hand from a long line of people like you.

I have simply fine tuned it and added a few of my own extras.

If you are able to read,by reading my post, it would have been crystal clear that I did not,
nor have I ever intended to, visit France.

Where the French get their sense of self importance is beyond me considering their place in the world. This is the wonderful culture that gives refuge to the scum of the world.

Excellent point. Mind you, with or without the Germans we'd be speaking German. I learned German, English and French in school as a matter of course, as did my parents, my grandparents, my great-grandparents etc. A relatively normal state of affairs.

There is also an element of desire in these American/French confrontations. Neither side could live with out them in some strange way...

Odd observation. In my experience the Americans can live very well without confrontations with the French. Seems the French thrive on them. But then, it would be a very French point of view to tie such attitudes to an indefinite passion.

"...Or that French political thought was implemented better in the US then in France itself?..."

That is so brilliant. You could also say German political thought was implemented better here--both disasterous graftings, by the way.

Or, it could simply be a rational reaction to the pop culture America has flooded the planet with since emerging from WWII as the only one left standing.

And don't forget the more ancient differences between the "non-reformed" aesthetic and the brisk, commercial, value-driven world created by the "victorious" protestants.

If you are not part of the solution, YOU are part of the PROBLEM. The French are arrogant jerks that can't get the job done, and will have to decide...are you with US, or the terrorists?

I hope they/YOU choose wisely.

Who are those 'people like me', I wonder. I think your rudeness comes quite naturally; you never needed a teacher at all. I maintain that your pontifications about France have lost most if not all credibility since you have never been there and never intend to go. Your judgement and hatred are based on pure prejudice; that is fine, enjoy them, but don't bore others with them, please.
