PARIS (Reuters) - Nearly half the French public believes the four-week-old U.S. military action in Afghanistan is failing, a poll released Sunday showed.

The survey by pollsters Ipsos for the Journal du Dimanche weekly showed 47 percent thought the campaign was failing, with just 17 percent confident of success.

The remainder of the 969-head sample, interviewed on November 2, gave no response or said the outlook was unclear. No definition for what constituted success or failure was given.

Oh, right.

Their culture of bad manners, snotty waiters and overpriced food?

I vowed years ago that France was not worth my time or money.

There is not one American person who has been to France that I know who did not
come back with a Rudeness report on the unwashed French population.

Why bother?

"Have you been to France?"

Sure have. Haven't seen a battle yet that the french won't run away from either. Let's see how they feel about it when someone knocks down the eiffel tower.

"...recognisably French culture and French way of living."

Being a long lived society of arrogant arses is nothing to admire. Perhaps if the French got over themselves a bit they might be able to shake off their culture and way of living.

I can, actually. I assume from this reply that you have never been to France. So I wonder: whence your wisdom on the country? It is also interesting to see that both your comment on the French and your reply to my question whether you had been to France, are examples of unadularated rudeness. Something you seem to deplore in others, but not in yourself, clearly.

If I remember correctly, there was a case a few years ago when a plane was hijacked and stormed by French police in Marseilles. Later, it emerged that the plan had been to fly the thing into the Eiffeltower.

Almost inevitably, that most Gascon of all animals, the rooster, was chosen long ago as the national symbol of France. (The choice is fortuitous, of course, because of a Latin pun, Gallus, meaning both the courtyard animal and the inhabitant of Gaul. The English pun could probably be considered even more apt). The brilliantly plumed cock is the first to announce the dawn of a new day to everybody, dominates his immediate world, seduces and fecundates all the unresisting hens, destroys his rivals, and crows triumphantly from the top of the dungheap.

Well I had the pleasure of living there for while--going to school. I think a tour of France may bring out the worst in both parties--American "last remaining superpower-edness" and French cussedness. Day to day life in France is a whole 'nuther kettle of bouillabaisse.

There is also an element of desire in these American/French confrontations. Neither side could live with out them in some strange way...

Ya know, I say what the hell lets nuke France too! I am so sick and damned tired of all these crybaby nations taking taking taking from us but don't give us jack squat in return. After all we are the United States of America and we don't have to take crap from anyone! We saved the Frenchs sorry hide but yet they think we are failures. Lets lob a nuke in the middle of paris too just to show them our appreciation and while we are at it lets wipe out any other third world craphole that gives us greif!
Stepping off of my soapbox now.
