fled with 1,000 pounds of fertilizer from a Whitman landscaping business yesterday morning

Just a small confiming point: 1000 lbs. of fertilizer at 4 lbs./gal.=200 gallons=five 55gal. drums. Werern't six seen in the van? Pretty close!

Where was that incident. I remember hearing about a case last week, but don't remember where it was.

Fertilizer would be much heavier than 4 pounds/gal, but you have to leave room for the fuel oil (6 pounds/gal).
