Marriage Vegas Style Fails to Please Girlfriend
Reuters ^ | 11-02-2001

LONDON (Reuters) - British student James Cripps went to Las Vegas, had a few drinks and got married.

His problem was that he already had a girlfriend, and she was not pleased to hear that he had married a complete stranger.

He put off telling her about it for three days after he returned from the United States, and then she dumped him.

The Times newspaper said 21-year-old Cripps had now begun the humiliating process of trying to find his bride, a 26-year-old optician from Australia, to try to persuade her to agree to an annulment.

Cripps has little memory of his new wife, nor can he recall much of the ceremony.

"I was way too drunk," he was quoted as saying. "We were all very drunk and thought it would be a laugh if we got married.

"It was one of those stupid things. If you go to Las Vegas, you drink, you gamble and you get married, which is what I did, although I regret it now."

He added: "It was funny for a while, but now my ex-girlfriend is never going to talk to me again."

I'll have to check to see what the line is for James getting an annulment.

This sort of reminds me of the current plotline of the NBC soap opera "Passions," where Julian Crane and Teresa Lopez-Fitzgerald get drunk at a hotel in Bermuda and wake up to find themselves married to each other. Life imitates art, I guess...

As a divorcee, I can only say that he is sooo lucky that he could not find her and she could not find him. God only knows how I wished for that scnerio when my ex-wife went on the savage cash attack with her attorney leading the pack.I survived, but the party is still (ten years later) not over. So I wish this young dude well and suggest he leave the country as fast as possible, she may want the same!

The Girlfriend was lucky to find out that this drunk is a loser before she made the biggest mistake of her life.

The girlfriend gave him his walking papers because I am certain that he consumated the marraige. And NOBODY gets drunk enough to get married and not know it.

No, he probably performed the ceremony...I think that one of the "wedding chapels" has an "Elvis" officiating.

Just about every thing I do in a relationship can be followed by the phrase, "...fails to please girlfriend." : (

Being drunk during the ceremony, I doubt if it would be legally binding anyway.

Wasn't there a movie with this plot?

It was funny for a while.....

I got married in Tahoe by the Right Reverend Raymond Love. Twenty-five years later, I'm still laughing.

TRUE WEDDDING STORY--

My cousin was a photographer's assistant in a midwestern college town and was helping in the back of the church when the fully-dressed bride approached the priest. My cousin heard him say, "This is very unusual, but go ahead," and the bridge proceeded alone down the aisle and faced the congregation.

The bride said that on her biggest day, she just wanted to personally thank her guests for being there. Many had come long distances and the presents were all generous reminders of their love for her.

She wanted to thank the parents of the groom for being so nice to her and for the lovely rehearsal dinner.

She wanted to thank her wonderful parents for always being there for her and loving her. They were the best parents ever.

But, most of all, she wanted to thank her fiance....

for sleeping with her maid-of-honor the night before and saving her from making the mistake of a lifetime.

With that, she walked back down the aisle, alone....party was over.
