Nuclear Threat within US Possible (My Title)
FoxNews | October 30, 2001

Posted on 10/30/2001 6:33:30 AM PST by PrivacyChampion

FOX NEWS just reporting that there is a potential risk of a nuclear terrorist attack against the US, maybe within the Continental borders with a 'dirty nuke' that has been smuggled across the Mexican border.

This is the threat that AG Ashcroft warned about yesterday.

So there will be less sympathy when such an atrocity is committed.

Possibly, but I don't think that you'd find much sympathy one way or the other. Shock and fear maybe. The problem is that sooner or later I think that we'd be forced to use our nukes. That would bring an abrupt end to all terrorist activities worldwide as Arab leaders in fear of their own lives finally act to eliminate all terrorists within their borders. That may be how this all plays out anyway.

If they had it, they would already have used it.

Not necessarily. We are used to thinking in terms of one single “conspiracy” at a time. But in the old days, the Communists in America had different “cells” that worked independently. That way, if one cell was discovered, no one in it knew what the other cells were doing. It’s possible that many different militant Arabic cells are at work here in the US, and different ones might do different things as time goes by.

Probably wouldn't help as the people doing this stuff are not in Afganistan they are spread all over the world. I read that there are elements of Al Queda down in Colombia and I wouldn't doubt in Venezuala with that new nutcase they have running that country. But of course nuking them couldn't hurt.

No offense Fred, but that immigration story is a sad joke. Much more needs to be done, and they know it, but refuse to do it.

After what happened on Sept. 11, how can you call folks here "chicken little." The threat is real and most of us can deal with it. It is not alarmist to recognize that Americans are still at risk.

One could read the seriousness in Ashcroft's face

True, but Ashcroft always looks serious.

Not blaming you, but there are people calling in to TV and radio talk shows claiming Ashcroft looked "terrified" and criticizing him for it.

The same thing happened the night of Bush's big speech in September -- people claimed Laura Bush looked "ashen" and frightened half to death.

These face-readers get on my nerves. I didn't see anything like that on either of their faces. Concern, yes. Panic, no. I think they've both handled themselves well.

Let’s keep reminding them of that. In the meantime, this is the only “check the immigrants” activity I’ve seen inside the federal government during the past 30 years.

Re: The Mexican Link
A friend of mine lived in San Diego for a while and told me that many arabs disguise themselves as mexicans and sneak across the border with the hordes of illegals.

Your so right. We aren't frightened by the warnings of our Government, we are thankful that they realize we are intelligent enough to handle it, deserve to know,..and that by being more **Alert** we may even prevent it!!

The "Chicken littles" are the newsmen and women who are admonishing the administration. But they would do that no matter what. They should all be aware, that CNN's ratings dropped because America caught on. We can't cry for knowledge,.. "why didn't the Government warn us?" then cry because they finally do treat us as intelligent adults!!!

Deal with it Media!!!

If they had it, they would already have used it. They aren't just going to sit on it and risk being discovered and caught.

Must respectfuul disagree with you. Perhaps they just obtained it or perhaps they're just getting it to the location where they want it or perhaps the enemy perceives a psychological benefit in ratcheting up the level of violence rather than leading with his best punch.

You don't need a detonation, which would be noisy and attract attention by the blast damage. Instead, you could have a thermite bomb that melted the radioactive material and spewed it into the atmosphere (similiar to a Chernobyl or uncontained Three Mile Island incident). The affected area would be many square miles. And a real mess to clean up.

Dirty nukes are bad enough. What about the so called "suitcase nuke". There is credible evidence that the former Soviet Union built quite a number of such devices and roughly 50 of them can no longer be accounted for.

Does anyone have any more information on this subject?
