I wish I could begin to understand how they think. I agree they would have used it first if they had it, with a warning of more of them to follow if we didn't pull out of the mid-east. It would have been much more effective than to use it now that we have mobilized. They could not have possibly believed we would pull out after the attack on 9-11. They have to be in it for a long haul and figure on us being worn down. But it's hard to believe that the level of concern expressed tonight would be over small attacks. Also, they must have been ready to pounce once the terrorist bill was passed. Maybe they were able to get more info as a result of that.

"It sad that our country and government have to deal with these EVIL elements."

What's really sad is we let the evil sob's into America illegally. I've been on a soap box regarding illegals for 10 years, and for my effort I've been called every name in the books. And that's been by Republicans.

At least I tried my very best to warn as many folks as possible...

Sidebar,
If our government was half as ''on the ball'' as you are, we'd all have no concerns . . .

TGYC,
Keep fighting the good fight. Thanks!

In an editorial of a nearby small town weekly newspaper, the writer compared the date Sept. 11 to the 911 emergency number, and his last sentence said 10-31 is police code for "crime in progress". Do we have any law enforcement officer freepers that can confirm that code? I've been very uneasy since I read that.

From a fiscal standpoint, I tried to total the annual amount we spend on "security" for our citizens and our country's assets. I'll estimate the amount is well over $100 BILLION a year. It includes much more than $30B CIA, $40-50B FBI, ? National Security Agency, ? Military Security agencies.

All things considered, I'd say we don/t get the most bang for our bucks. They FAILED our citizens - for their primary function is to keep it's citizens secure from enemies. Well, I suppose congress has tied their hands to some extent, and then we had the Clintonistas for the last 8 yrs.

Those two honchos need to spend more time at the office and less time on the press conference tour. The announcement could have said be careful crossing streets. Where the heck is the meat in this hamburger?

I did a quick web search. Take your pick:

From http://www.grove-ent.com/nasa.html: 10-31 Suspicious person/circumstances

From http://www.911dispatch.com/information/tencode.html : 10-31 crime in progress

From http://www.10-david.com/features/tencodes.asp : 10-31 Pick Up

From http://www.provide.net/~bfield/10codes.html : 10-31 Pick Up

From http://911audio.com/radio_codes/new_york_police_fire_radio_codes_p2.htm :

ROCHESTER POLICE DEPARTMENT CODES AND SIGNALS: 10-31 Robbery In Progress

SUFFOLK COUNTY POLICE RADIO 10-CODES: 10-31 Lost Child

SYRACUSE POLICE DEPARTMENT CODES: 10-31 Subject Has Prior Record

YONKERS FIRE DEPARTMENT TEN CODES: 10-31 High-rise Building Fire

For whole country by state (and then by jurisdiction within state): http://911audio.com/radio_codes/

Note: a few places claim to have "official" or "common" lists, however from the few specific locations I checked, it doesn't look like there are standards, since they seem to vary all over the place.

To run your own web search: http://www.altavista.com/sites/search/web?q=%28%22ten+codes%22+%7C+%2210+codes%22%29+%26+%2210-31%22&kl=XX&r=&d2=0&d0=&d1=&nbq=50&pg=aq&search=Search

Any links on that?

Not important enough to make the World Wide Web as far as I can tell. I believe the Univ of Alaska Museum has a specimen or two. The smilodonts here were probably scrawny, subsisting on rabbits and voles. Interior Alaska was ice-free during the last ice-age, grassy, scrub spruce trees, much like now. But something definitely happened suddenly. Sometimes along a freshcut riverbank a muskox will emerge frozen in place in the muck, hide, flesh, and all, standing on his feet.

Argh, ***WARNING*** -- one of the sites I visited from that search shoved a half-dozen of the nastiest pop-ups onto my desktop, including one named "tracker" something that only appeared as a button, and resisted my efforts to close it. It took several right-click/close operations to get rid of the damn thing. And one of 'em waited several minutes then took over my entire desktop with it's damn spam-page!

There are corners of the web that have gone straight to hell lately...

"Where the heck is the meat in this hamburger?"

The "meat" was in the warning to stay out of the way of stepped-up enforcement operations we will be encountering. I've looked around for a transcript and can't find one, so I don't have the exact wording, but it sure sounded ominous when he said it. If someone has the transcript, please post it, and highlight those words, thanks.

Don't think I've ever seen Ashcroft so SERIOUS and SOMBER!!! He's concerned - BIG TIME - and he made sure we knew it!!!!

That certainly was the impression I got. The FBI has picked up on something very serious. And yes, Ashcroft decided not to hide his concern.

TO: ALL

I think the sigh was just because he knows that this *WARNING* is going to do....it will make the economy plunge even deeper. Look at what he did....he issued this serious warning so now everyone will stay out of malls and walmarts..off of airplanes...etc.
Maybe we should all go to the little stores this week and help them out. Terrorists wont' bother with the small stores.....I don't think. BUT.....STAY OUT OF 7-11'S!
