The Censored Republic
Free Republic | Jim Robinson

Ok, this is a free for all thread. Come in and take your best shots. I promise I won't delete it or get upset. Get it out of your systems and then we will see if we can solve the problems. There always several sides to any story and several possible solutions to any problem. I'd like to hear them all and I'd like to solve as many problems as we can and get this forum kicking socialist butt again instead of kicking each other. So, please anyone with a complaint or a problem or a possible solution, (moderators, posters, FAB, everyone) please chime in. Thanks, Jim

Hey, ABoS! I haven't seen you in ages! I'm curious, who ended up winning the "guess the correct number of electoral votes" contest last year?

CYA.

I get irritated when you pull a thread just as I’m about to post to it. On the other hand I got nauseous and left the forum when several freepers described what they would do to a dead body. You’ve got your work cut out for you man.

You already know what I think of FR and you (((smooch))). But lately I miss a bunch of replies because I read the first fifty responses and it seems easier to go back to a new thread than to load the next 50 replies. I used to read all the way down just because it was there. Oh well, maybe I save time now. I would also like for the monitor to give a reason for pulling thread or reply. I sort of miss the old "free-wheeling" mess that was Free Republic. You just dove in and took your chances.

1. I've seen a lot of curse words in threads lately. Even this one.

2. Sometimes threads disappear and I don't understand why.

3. You rock.

sit-rep: Other than that, I'm still here, and plan to send some doe in a short.

LurderNoMore!: The doe should stay with the fawn. Send a buck instead.

LOL. Not only that, I can't figure who'd send in a doe to play short? I mean, I know that good shortstops are "endangered species" themselves, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere this side of rational!

My 1 cent: Maybe you should just get rid of the FReeper option of choosing "Breaking News" and/or "Front Page". Instead, have a way for articles to be 'considered' for the "Breaking News" and/or "Front Page" sidebars. FReepers could post the relevent 'breaking' info in the keyword section and the sidebar moderators could place headlines in the sidebar areas at their discretion.

My other 1 cent: Another option could be a 'button' on the thread to request it for the breaking/front page sidebar; if X amount of FReepers make a request, it could be put in the appropriate sidebar section....

Personally, I think the site is wonderful and most of my gripes are about the side-topics that don't, IMO, seem germane to the expressed purpose of the website but I don't see how the host controls that without putting a lot of noses out of joint.

There are limits on what is acceptable to post and I think that's as it should be. Otherwise, FR becomes what its denigrators claim it is ("racist", "homophobic", "extremist", etc.). We should always welcome discourse with those who disagree as long as it is presented in a manner that is thoughtful rather than inflamatory.

Your title indicates you are accused of being too heavy handed and I've had some of my posts deleted too (usually for foul language or to make an obnoxious point that had to be made). Upon further reflection, I accepted the deletion and moved on. I guess others are too thin-skinned to do that.

These are treacherous times and, just as the media bitches about the military not telling them evrything about the war (those fools!), some here probably bitch about the multiple postings, the unsourced rumors and outright hysteria that sometimes gets pulled. You and your moderators have to sort out truth from lies, disruptors from agitators and what details could put our fighting men in greater jeopardy.

If you don't always make the right call, we should remember everyone is human and, right or wrong, we all live to fight another day. Bottom line, it's your site. I'm amazed you give some folks as much leeway as you do so I can't argue about being too rigid in posting guidelines. If I ran this place, I'd be a lot harsher.

As to the new software, my only peeve is that "last" got removed from the top. But that's a small sacrifice in return for automatically closing tags. Nothing killed a thread for me quicker than enormous screaming blue blinking crap that was inevitably never closed.

Thanks for all you do.

You can't expect us to modify our behavior if you don't tell us what causes our banning. And I'm going to use that word fair here. I don't think it's fair to be banned without a just cause (rule violations) or a notification.

You want to turn one man's privately-maintained forum into a federal court complete with due process provisions, court and evidentiary rules, and an opportunity to argue and appeal? You--a man who hold rules and laws in complete disdain?

You don't want this elaborate system set up so you can "know" why you're being banned. You want it so you can ARGUE against your being banned. No rationale is likely to persuade you. You don't believe in the efficacy of rules and laws to alter behavior, remember?

The rest of us can easily deduce why any particular banning has occurred. I suspect you can too.

I miss the underscore under the "To:" that let us jump back to the post we made to which someone is responding.

It's still there, in another form......

I have no complaints. I always have two browser windows open, and one of them is almost always sitting at Free Republic.

I'm with Selara, not only is this my browser's home page, I have no complaints at all, but...

This forum is highly addictive.(Kids, don't try this at home) There are times where I have at least half a dozen windows open following as many threads and times I've sat in front of this computer for many more hours than I care to admit. :-)

"Best danged website on the whole danged internet."

I agree with most of this post. To call this "Free Republic" is a joke. Threads and posts are pulled for reasons that have nothing to do with legalities or sound reason; it seems they are yanked at random to justify a moderators time.

I seriously do not believe you realize the damage that is being done to the reputation of Free Republic. Just when somebody new starts getting into it and is ready to spread the word to friends, a post or thread gets pulled for no sound reason and destroys that poster's budding love of freerepublic.

I believe you need a serious re-evaluation of the thread/post pulling crap. Or, just call it "Censored Republic."

I'm not sure I have the solution, but part of the problem at FR is that many here have lost their focus or perhaps never had it. It's fine that FR has grown from what it was years ago when relatively few articles were posted into a larger discussion of news events and analysis pieces.

But a lot of the more important discussion, the stuff of conservatism, is getting buried.

We had a post tonight in Breaking News about which "tribe" on the Survivor TV show got immunity, whatever the hell that is.

The moderators are making a good effort to police the place, and objectionable posts are removed more promptly. But their judgment is not perfect. I don't expect it to be.

But there should be better communication and justification for their actions. Obviously, very few people are going to agree that their post or thread should be deleted. That's a given. But some of those represent a lot of effort by the poster and it doesn't seem to much to ask that a reason be given for the action, at least if one is requested.

In general, I am thrilled to be part of FR, and I would be perfectly content if you changed nothing at all from the way it currently it. But more focus on conservatism would definitely be an improvement.

It's like opening up your newspaper and finding that someone has cut articles out of it without explaining why.

FWIW, my wife is always cutting out articles from the newspaper before I read it. And she never explains why.

What else is new?

I wonder - would it be possible to suspend some threads (no new posts), include a reason for the suspension of the thread, and move them to a special zone? Truly objectionable threads would, of course, still be deleted...

I hope it couldn't be done... the BS would remain and no one could refute it then. And we would have endless keyboard lawyers trying to whine about the reasoning. It is just simpler for all concerned if JimRob just deletes what he wants to, and doesn't have to explain it in excruciating detail each time to the 'sensitive' types.

One of the best indications of a propaganda thread is to leave it up until it gets shot so full of holes that the aspiring propagandist or helper posts it again to begin a 'clean thread.' The idea is to tire all the naysayers down so that the propaganda eventually gets through.

Any time you think a thread mmight get shot down, save the thread on your system. I've done it since for a while, a disruptor could crap all over threads to force their deletion. Now, the disruptor can simply be removed and the threads have much better survival rates than before, but saving particularly interesting threads is still worthwhile.

Boy does he ever. I'd tell him so but I don't want to look like I'm sucking up. I think what he's doing is great, even if I don't always agree with the way he does it (come to think of it, it's usually only other freepers I disagree with).

He does have his work cut out for him, alright....

Hey man, great work!

What am I doing here? I need to get to bed. My wife can't believe how much time I spend on this thing...neither can I!

Since everyone else seems to be in pure kiss-up mode, let me be the one to vary a wee bit. :)

I do appreciate all that you and John do. I know it's a ton of work. With that said, I seriously ask you to articulate exactly what types of threads are being pulled and why. Some of 'em are obvious. Some of 'em are far from apparent, however.

Let me also say that while I don't recall seeing you say this, TONS of people do and I think it's incredibly inappropriate. What I'm talking about is whenever anyone posts a complaint or sometimes just a suggestion, they're instantly attacked by a string of "Hey, it's JimRob's private playground, so don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out" crap. That's garbage. As I said earlier, I (along with the vast majority of folks here, I'm sure) do appreciate the time and effort you expend here. OTOH, FR's bills get paid by many people, not just you and John, which pretty much destroys the idea that it's an absolute private playground and no one has the right to dare question anything.

So I guess I'd like to see a few more exchanges like this on an occasional basis. A thread or two in which you allow people to interact and get stuff off their chests. An atmosphere where people aren't ridiculed with a mile of utterly childish comments when they pose a legitimate question.

Thanks for this thread.

MM
