The Censored Republic
Free Republic | Jim Robinson

Posted on 10/25/2001 8:59:47 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

Ok, this is a free for all thread. Come in and take your best shots. I promise I won't delete it or get upset. Get it out of your systems and then we will see if we can solve the problems. There always several sides to any story and several possible solutions to any problem. I'd like to hear them all and I'd like to solve as many problems as we can and get this forum kicking socialist butt again instead of kicking each other. So, please anyone with a complaint or a problem or a possible solution, (moderators, posters, FAB, everyone) please chime in. Thanks, Jim

It's your show, and you can set what rules you desire, however . . .

Recently someone posted a long, self-important, and windy essay by Justin Raimondo. Typical tripe he has been churning out since 9-11, but since no one is worrying about global warming any more, no big deal. First Amendment is still in force, and the only way you know it is working is when jerks are allowed to demonstrate the magnitude of their folly in a public forum. However, it was the type of post that would generate lot of negative reaction from FReepers.

After reading the piece, I was not overly surprised when I discovered that the moderator had deleted the first 114 responses. Given Raimondo's position I figured that you needed an atomic-blast filter on your monitor to safely read them, and asbestos paper if you wanted to read them. I mean if they were deleted they had to be really off the reservation.

Then another poster mentioned that you could read the deleted posting if you chose the "Old Style" option. I figured that I might learn some new and interesting words, or perhaps some fresh ways to really, really put someone down. Nope. The negative comments were pretty much the norm for FR -- everyday put-downs, and not noticeably incindiary or violent. There are certain members (THEY know and WE know who they are) that revel in getting that kind of reaction.

Since then I have been wondering what type of solicism was committed that led to the deletion of 114 posts. Was it something more serious than forgetting to crook your pinkie properly? Did the moderator intend to delete one post, but slip and delete them all? Was the moderator just feeling cranky that day?

The post -- and the responses -- were not all that captivating. My bemusement centers on the motivation for deleting them more than anything else.

I love the new "self search" function and the way it opens in a new window. That makes it much easier.

I think I'm going to have to swear off of graphics for awhile. My graphics were residing at Netscape and they changed their site...so none posted here work now.

I received a Freepmail saying that my tiny graphic was disturbing some browsers. If I had been able to, I would have deleted them. The situation is corrected now, but that doesn't address the old posts.

As far as those yelling "CENSORED"... there might be a solution... This is the problem as I see it. All of us Freepers want to post the news as we receive it. (radio, local TV, etc.). Sometimes sources are not yet available. Why not create a new category for posting these types of stories. Local Breaking News or something like that....

Only pull obvious kook subjects ie ... "Space Aliens Are Living In My Garage" type stuff. Also, would like to see the self search function go directly to the numbered reply instead of to the first one in the the thread. I get tired of wading through the entire thread. Thanks for the great site and lets keep up the pressure on the socialist DemonRATS.
They are running for the tall grass this year!

Look at the posts of mine that have been pulled, Jim. (If you have them saved.) There was nothing in there that violated the rules. They were critical of Bush, Israel, Big Oil, etc

We are at war......adjust your petty efforts to something more productive.

I keep hearing about how Islamcs in America are no threat to us.

In your estimation what percentage of Jihad Islamics are there as opposed to pro-American Islamics?

I would guess it to be 50/50

Regards.

I find it rather telling that you can quote the 'no profanity' rule and then litter your post with profanity.

Is this breaking news?

Nope, don't think so...sidebar moderator???lol

Jim Robinson - what can I say - FreeRepublic is the best thing to come along since sliced bread (it's late, that the best I can do.) But, I was following the threads that were posted this evening that may have prompted your thread and have a suggestion: In this very sensitive time we are all enduring, perhaps only "breaking news" that can be verified through a journalistic source should be posted?

Although it can be exciting to hear of incidents such as tonight's at the Phoenix airport as they unfold, and undoubtedly Marine Inspector was caught up in the "heat of the moment" and may not have used the best judgment, perhaps, for the time being, FReepers should be notified (by you and the staff) that these types of posts will be pulled. I have read some of the "loose lips sink ships" threads and don't recall this particular issue being addressed. If it has and I missed it, just ignore this post and have a great evening!

I think if you stated in the post the it was intended only for a particular group, it would be respected by most.

I thought it was cool that, when I did a self search and clicked on the link, it took me right to the post! Now it doesn't do that anymore

Second that, that was a great timesaver for those of us suffering without high bandwidth connections...(Not available in my rural area.)

Thank you that, even when a thread has been pulled, the link to the original article (if there is one) is left intact, so you can see what the posted story was.

I believe if you click the number to the left of the post it will take you directly to it.

"Is this breaking news?

ROTFL!!!

...and while we are on the subject of the thread police, ("There always several sides to any story Hey Jim...do you mean there are"?!!) I get really sick and tired of reading know-it-all, grammar/spelling-correcting posts! Read the posts and consider the thoughts that went into them. My father is a brilliant thinker, but not a wonderful speller. This does not make him stupid...it means he has strengths in other areas. Every time I read a post where one person is correcting another (on spelling, grammar, placement of post) I am reminded how shallow some people can be.

Let's have some intelligent discussion, and stop flaming people about minutia, please.
