A group of Afghan children collect packets of food aid after an U.S. aircraft completed a night time air drop over a refugee camp in Kumkishlyak in Northern Afghanistan, October 25, 2001. Afghanistan's ruling Taliban on Thursday dismissed as U.S. propaganda a Pentagon statement that they intended to poison food dropped by U.S. aircraft or provided by humanitarian groups to Afghan civilians. The Pentagon said on Wendesday that it had received information the Taliban may poison the food supplies to Afghan civilians and blame the United States. REUTERS/Vasily Fedosenko

I noticed that, too. Very few adult refugees. Those poor kids are pretty much on their own.

Looks like two packets each of short bread and crackers, a pouch each of strawberry jam and (I assume) peanut butter, a packet each of sugar and salt, a pack (or two) of matches, and a moist towlette.

One of my magazines had a great up close shot of it.

Even if these people can't read, old glory is on the covering. Great move.

Just an observation: These people are not in Taliban territory: you can see it in the womens' faces (more accurately: you can see the womens' faces).

I would say these people are in the northern territories, where they have no access to the northern allies or the northern allies do not have enough food to feed them also.

Also, the little girl looks suspiciously clean and cute.

These people are being protected by the northern allies, they have homes and running water. As far as them being "cute", In my opinion many of the Afghanistan people have a unique beauty to them. I have seen pictures of blond headed babies, green eyes on adults & children, and red haired men. They all do not have brown eyes and dark colored hair.

Are you really that naive ?These are "selected" pictures.Someone had pictures last week of the soldiers in the fields collecting bags of food. They were competing for the food with the women and children..and we all know how they love and care for their women dont we?

This is from the US office of propaganda..cute kids big eyes..none look like those kids in Africa with bloated bellies..these are well nourished kids..take a good close look

Yes, it says the packets were dropped in Northern Afghanistan, i.e. Northern Alliance territory, not Taliban territory. These are Shi'ites, and so no burqas. But believe it or not, their kids need to eat, too.

I never realized that we have an office of US propoganda till the President tried to sell us on the lie that this isnt about Islam

All that plus two entrees of either Bean Salad, Beans & Rice, or some kind of lentil mush.

Bring those kids over here. We'll find homes for them.

Isn't that the truth, US people would scoop these young ones up in no time.

BTW none of those children look like they are starving..go to Africa and look you will see what real starvation looks like..

What is starvation supposed to look like? A lot of them don't look like skeletons until they are actually dying, and those African children also have other diseases brought on by malnourishment and unsanitary conditions that makes them look that way--i.e. dysentery. Undernourished kids don't necessarily look skeletal.

Are you begrudging a few Pop Tarts to the "evil" Afghan children? If you want to feel better about the situation, watch that National Geographic special with Stephen Junger that was filmed last year. There's a couple of "really" starving Afghan babies on that program who are too weak to even cry. I'm sure you'd love to watch it.

Yes, I am sure that Christian homes would adopt Afghan orphans, along with Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddist, Mormon homes as well.

So what's your point?

Like I said: I really hope the pics are legitimate.

It's just that the girl is way too clean in comparison to the tent encampment behind her (in which she's presumably living). She's freshly bathed, clothes are spotless ... I dunno, it just looks suspicious.

(OTOH, if my wife would allow it, I'd probably try to adopt the little moppet....)

We do know what "starvation "looks like..It has dull lifeless eyes ,blotchy skin, thin legs and arms ,all before the bloated bellies.

Do you know during WWII how many food drops we did for the poor isolated children in Japan?

Well, their Daddies are dead and their Mommies can't come outside.

I agree totally, some of these children have their fathers fighting in the northern alliance frontline.
Why we have these pictures is because we have reporters at the frontline with the northern alliance.

Geez, for a registered nurse you sure are bitter and hateful toward children. Did you ever stop to think for a moment that it just might be a litte better, a little more Christian, to feed some kids even if they are the enemy?
