After the horrifying sneak attack of 9/11 and the continuing anthrax scares, I am certain that our government is doing the right thing in going after OBL and his Taliban henchmen. Their words and their deeds are just crying for us to wipe them off the face of the earth, consign them to history's dustbin, or whatever similar fate we can conjure up. I am 99.9999% certain that GWB is handling the job well and doing the right thing for our nation. I hope he continues and carries the message to all the state sponsors of terrorism as well. But there are some things that are troubling me.
Before anyone starts flaming, this is not going to be a "blame America" screed. Au contraire. Through our tradition of liberty, we've always helped raise the level of civilization in places where we've injected our influence. The doubts that I have about the current war policy stem from this question: Considering the abuses and the lies heaped on American citizens in recent years by their federal government (IRS abuses, Waco, etc.), and the federal power grabs that were attempted long before 9/11 (Know Your Customer, Carnivore, and others), can we really, truly believe BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT that the tin-foil hat crowd is totally off base with their wacko conspiracy theories?
I've heard such types talk about the "Masonic brotherhood" which seeks to gain world domination by imposing the "new world order". I've read theories about how the CFR, Trilateral Commission, and the Bilderbergers are behind a vast scheme to impose the one-world socialist vision of the Illuminati at the expense of traditional American freedoms (What better way to eliminate liberty than to use the exigency of war?). In the past I've always taken such nonsense with a grain of salt. And my current reaction is "Why would any such conspiracy risk killing thousands of innocent people just to advance its agenda? Couldn't it be done in a more subtle way?"
But still, I'm troubled. How, for instance, were we able to pin the 9/11 attacks on bin Laden so quickly while claiming that his al-Qaeda organization is based on compartmentalized "cells" without a direct chain-of-command? Why is the evidence we have on him and al-Qaeda under seal? Why does the title of the new cabinet level organization (Office of Homeland Security) seem troubling? Am I wrong to be asking these questions? Could the tin-foil hat wackos be on to something? Is everything we're hearing from the media and the government true? Don't get me wrong: I support the government's actions in its fullfillment of its Constitutional duty to "provide for the common defense". I just hope I'm not being lied to - I don't want this to be a country that's has given up its birthright of liberty to advance some evil, conspiratorial agenda. That's not the America I want to live in.

I'll grant that there are indeed anti-American power-mongering conspirators at work in this country, and there may be some sophisticated conspiracys going on. What the tinfoil-hat crowd forgets is that the conspirators don't have to make these events (WTC, OKC, Columbine, etc.) happen, such events WILL happen on their own - the wise conspirator will not muck up the works by making things happen (and potentially fail or leave evidence), he will plan to manipulate the outcome (use rhetoric to pit one group against another, or to influence legislation). Sarah Brady didn't dope up some kids, brainwash them, arm them, and send them to Columbine, she just planned her press conferences & bills and waited for the inevitable to happen. Likewise, conspirators abusing the 9/11 events did not make the planes crash or mail Anthrax, they just waited for the inevitable high-profile terrorist act to occur and are now reacting as planned.
$h!t happens - those who plan on it happening simply have to wait for it to happen.
Like you, I have heard about the CFR, Illuminati, etc for years and never payed much attention. Recently, I have started doing some research on the Fed, which leads to the CFR and everything else. The list of CFR members is quite amazing.
For example, you may have heard about the U.S. Commission on National Security. This is also called the Hart-Rudman Commission. This is the commission that suggested the Office of Homeland Security. You may know that both Gary Hart and Warren Rudman are members of the Council on Foreign Relations. But did you know that all twelve of the "Commissioners" are members of the Council on Foreign Relations along with the Executive Director? Note that the Commission's website, www.nssg.gov, has a GOV extention, not ORG.
If you have never paid attention to the CFR, then this probably means very little to you. I would be more interested in the comments of those who have their tin-foil hats firmly planted on their heads:)
Not at all. I don't believe that anti-Semitic nonsense anymore than I believe the tin-foilers. I'm simply trying to play devil's advocate. As you're probably aware, the federal government hasn't been the most forthright and honest organization in recent years (re: X-42 and his bride).
It's not stupidity; it's just honest skepticism. Get a grip.
I have a very good grip. One that I've spent many meny years developing. Truth is simply truth, and if you don't want to know it, you never will. The Office of Homeland Security has been in the planning stages for many years - it's documented quite thoroughly. It was only waiting for an "event" to make the American people be willing to give up the things they've refused to give up, freedom wise, for the last 10 years or so, to be implemented. 11 September was the event.
Coincidence or not, that IS what happened and is happening.

Perhaps. But not to believe that the USA gov't was waiting for just such an event to be able to implement complex plans that they'd had for quite some time. I don't think "our" government did the WTC attack. But I do know that they're taking advantage of it having happened. Have you read what's in the bills they're passing, some without even reading them??? It's the same stuff that they've been trying to pass for YEARS, but that the public refused to allow by raising such an uproar every time they'd try.

You are so correct. Just look at all the sheeple who woke up in Madison, Wisconsin when the school board banned the pledge and allowed only the National Anthem played without words. From my understanding, there were no FReepers at that hearing. Over 1,000 sheeple attended the hearing which reversed the decision and a recall effort is underway. Also, look at the other situations: the company who banned little American flags on cubicle desks, the fire trucks displaying flags, etc. The people are awake and the liberal left is dying a fast death. The only ones remaining are the fringe, luanitic, die-hards. I wouldn't doubt that many of those fanatics are developing some of the conspiricy theories.
Where's Carvelle? Bonior? and the score of others? Their voices have been squashed. Their little petty leftist agendas are nothing compared to freedom and liberty. Campaign finance reform? Gone. Look at the surge of gun sales and the backlash the the anti-gun crowd is receiving. PETA wanting to have gas masks for animals. The liberal agnedas are really comical, without substance, and the sheeple are seeing through it now. Thank God!
