U.S. Should Halt All Junk Mail
October 22, 2001 | Woodstock

U.S. Should Halt All Junk Mail (my headline)

In the wake of a massive and devastating terrorist attack on U.S. soil on September 11 and country-wide concern about mail tainted with virulent forms of Anthrax, would it not make sense to halt all unsolicited mail sent via the USPS?

And what about Publishers Clearinghouse mailing OxiClean samples in their November sweepstakes kick-off? Are they crazy? I hope they postpone this idea.

Effective immediately, all junk mail should be halted until the FBI, CDC and US postal Inspectors have a better handle on the situation. (And if you asked me, it should stay halted permanently.)

And you want to turn around and hurt the innocent junk mailers? Think about it, that's the sort of thing liberals like to do: make innocent, law-abiding citizens' lives harder while doing nothing

Junk mail does nothing for me but fill my trash. How 'bout you?

Better idea would be to load a couple thousand pounds of mail at a time into an airtight hopper, then shake it around a lot and sample the air for anthrax.

Hopefully all of my bills land in the hopper with Anthrax. But, alas, VISA would be sure to have it disinfected and sent along.....

thanks for clarifying that. I feel this is different however. We need boxcutters and commercial jets. We don't need junkmail, and this would be a fine time to get rid of it. I'm appalled at all the crap that finds its way into my mailbox. And since some of it has personal info in it I can't just toss it, and don't own a shredder, I have to burn it. Fine in the winter time but not so great in the summer. I don't feel I'd be giving up anything essential to our freedom by temporarily banning junkmail or mail without a return address.

"would it not make sense to halt all unsolicited mail sent via the USPS?"

And in the process handing another victory to the terrorists as we add thousands more to the unemployent rolls.

This is a huge industry.

Gosh, Fred--only desperate people actually open and read junk mail....unless it's the Victoria's Secret catalogue.

Could you imagine the death toll after a couple of thousand postal workers are laid off?

Now there is food for thought.

>>>I think another good idea would be requiring a return address on all mail.<<<

Unenforcible. Remember, the Antrax letters have fake return addresses.

All we need to do is gather up all the Anthrax and mail it back to:

Al-Queda AKA Osama
BFE Afghanistan
ATTN: Taliban

I think another good idea would be requiring a return address on all mail.

One of the anthrax letters had a return address that listed a fake 4th grade class. So much for that idea!

If junk mail wasn't profitable for the companies doing the mailing... they'd stop doing it. I don't think that damaging companies that are engaging in harmless free enterprise helps America.

No bills should be sent to the mail at this time, they're scary enough without the anthrax on top of it.

LOL

"And all telemarketers too!"

Has anyone here tried that gizmo that Radio Shack sells for 50 bucks or so?
It's supposed to make telemarketers think your number has been disconnected, and they remove it from their lists!

Junk mail makes me sick on the walk from the mail box to the kitchen, where I don't call 911 but immediately deposit it all in the trash.

Such a waist of money, and causing us all to pay more for regular mail. $0.34 is outragous. It keeps going up and up but the junk mail keeps coming and making me sicker and sicker. I even ware rubber gloves, just in case (NOT)

Maybe we can collect all junk mail in the USA and drop it in a big block on the Taliban's heads.

Thats before we build the 15,000 foot high wall, 500 foot thick, with no openings around Afg. and then fill it with a mixture of hog fat and concrete.
