Anthrax may be in the Senate ventilation system, according to a Senate speaker.
More than 20 staff working for one of America's most powerful politicians have already been contaminated by powder sent in a letter.
US government sources said the anthrax powder sent to Senator Tom Daschle's Capitol Hill office was weapons-grade, and thus almost certainly produced by experts.
Preliminary tests on the powder sent to Mr Daschle, leader of the US Senate, indicated it had been refined for easy airborne dispersal, the sources said.
And, as a purified form ideal for use as a chemical weapon, it was also more likely the powder was produced in a military laboratory.
Weapons-grade anthrax must be clinically refined to a specific size, making it small enough to be sprayed efficiently, but not so small as to be immediately exhaled by its targets. Larger particles land on the skin and produce a less dangerous form of anthrax infection.
Anthrax is not contagious and a person must come into direct contact with the bacterium to be infected.
Hundreds of people working in the Senate have been taking precautionary antibiotics. And security officials closed an entire wing of the eight-storey Senate office building as testing continued.
Mr Daschle said the letter sent to his office contained "a very potent form of anthrax that clearly was produced by someone who knew what he or she was doing".
Anthrax powder has also been sent to NBC Nightly News anchorman Tom Brokaw in New York. The powder infected his assistant, Erin O'Connor, 38.
The Daschle and Brokaw letters were written by a nearly identical hand and were both posted from Trenton, New Jersey, on September 18. They both contained anti-American, anti-Israeli and pro-Islamic statements.
One man has already been killed after contracting the disease at a newspaper office in Boca Raton in Florida.

It was released into the air. The particle size is a few microns. This is real fine dust that is suspended in the air for days at a time. When the envelope is opened a certain amount escapes because it is so fine. It squirts out like smoke.
Huge amounts of mail might be contaminated from just a few leaky envelopes with small perforations. This is real bad. If you don't want everyone to know what your doing in this respect they might mail letters to themselves at a PO BOX where it wouldn't be discovered. The leaky thing would spread this stuff everywhere it went. The mail system is in a fact a huge distribution source,lets face it!!
Yes, this is my thought too. We're being distracted with these relatively small outbreaks, and our attention is scattered right now. There's something else coming down the pike...

The timing of this thing, the planning necessary, and testimony of witnesses (Atta seeking treatment for bleach-burned hands, etc) STRONGLY suggest Islamic terrorists are responsible.

I just don't think everyone is looking at this right. The threat is much greater than it looks. The 2nd guy in Fl. is sick and getting worse. The antibiotics aren't working for him. What if all 20 of people exposed at the Senate should die? What if the volume exposed through the mail is much higher than the few we know about? See my post #50

A microbiologist friend says there are two steps.
1. get your anthrax in a form suitable for aerosol spraying. Right they (whover they are) we know have got that. If they have a little I cannot see any reason why they haven't got a lot.
2. You need A : an open truck
B : Electric generator
C : Fan
D : Paint sprayer
E : Calm windless night, dry no rain
F : large City
Hey it's not rocket science. How do you think they were going to spray NY for West Nile Virus ? Exactly like that. How do they spray sidewalks for weeds / pests in your neighbourhood?
This is the one that worries the hell out of me.
If our current attack of anthrax did originate from Iraq, their work with camel pox(alledged cover for smallpox) is most worrisome.
Smallpox 'bombers' could be strolling the streets of USA as we type...
I'm positive they will have access to the proper Antibiotics, as for the rest of us poor working stiffs, well....we shall see.
