Jamie can't have it both ways: the Bible also mentions beating women and slaves. I'm sure modern Christians don't believe in it, so why should we hold up muslims to the same standard?
As for 4:34 verse a quick search on the internet gets you this link which says that the word 'beat' doesn't have the same meaning as it does in English, but is more like admonish.

How do you "admonish" your wife with a scourge?

Do you just wave it in her face and threaten to hit her? What if she still doesn't comply. Sorry, but instructions to beat your wife are found in the Koran. I think a better way of looking at it is how you first approached it:

Why? Because many Muslims still beat their wives, and few Christians (at least in America) do. Let's say in order for a Muslim nation to be considered "civilized" they have to have outlawed wife-beating, and let's hold Christian nations to the same standard. Now, count how many civilized Christian nations there are against how many civilized Muslim nations...

A friend of mine who is a modernist Muslim (she shops at Nordstrom's!) and whose father married one wife only, even after his relatives scolded him to take another, because she'd had all girls--explained to me that this scolding means to take a handkerchief and "hit" her with that. She demonstrated this for me. It's like when you snap a towel at someone. She said that Islam is interpreted differently depending on the culture you're in. She said that in Saudi Arabia, it is TRUE that if a woman leaves the house with any man who is not her husband, father, or brother, she AND her companion are killed on the spot. Her parents moved to Nairobi to raise their family in a modernist Muslim environment.
