Bioterrorism Discussion Thread

Today we heard about 2 more anthrax cases which is slowly surfacing as a very disturbing trend. Its hard to believe we have to worry about being exposed to Anthrax or small pox.

Anyway today Brokaw's assistant and an expert on terrorism from the NY Times were the latest targets of terror. The terrorists have clearly established a pattern: to knock out travel and communication in this country. If they knock out people in communication people will not know what is going on so that is what they are hitting now.

Unfortunately George W. Bush is a real prime target among these terrorists also. And if/ when Bin Laden is killed, (he may already be, we simply dont know) they will go after him bigtime. GOD FORBID. He is starting to resemble a martyr with so many supporting him etc.

Lets all continue to pray for America and her leaders.

IMO, there is every indication that this low-intensity, low-casualty anthrax mail bomb campaign was designed into the plot which kicked off with 9/11 from the start, esp. since it now appears Atta may have been involved in prepping the material. So the question becomes, why? There must be a reason. It doesn't make any sense as a finale, so it's a prelude to something. What? Who is behind this terror plot? Whose agents met with Atta six months ago? Who would expect to be on the receiving end of US strikes? And what is built into the plan to ensure his survival? Anybody heard of a strategic war doctrine called Mutual Assured Destruction?

Today on tv they showed a memorial to those lost in the Pentagon, happened one month ago. 64 people on the plane went into the Pentagon and 125 killed inside. Bodies of many, like Barbara Olson were never found.

For MAD to work requires that both parties are rational...and Saddam isn't.IF you are tip toeing around saying you think there is going to be a nuclear war, don't.Just say it.Now, do you think he has the capability to deliver an ICBM to hit Washington, or even Tel Aviv?

My backyard(East Lansing) was hit with some sort of white powder. We don't know what it is, but it looks like ALF or ELF made their third attack(hoax or not) in (5?) years on Michigan State.

In 1999, ALF set a fire at a research lab. $900,000 damage. They have a track record here. I'm waiting for copycats.

Well it seems like these mailings of anthrax are going to be at least limited in scope. Brokaws assistant had the skin type of anthrax causing fever and rash on her skin.

It's still scary when it hits my backyard. I'm less than a mile from that, and 2 miles from the State Capitol, not to mention Biopart medical lab which manufactures anthrax vaccines. My gun ain't going to protect me from that.

Lets see, 3 exposed at American Media in Florida, one actually contracts it and dies. A letter sent to Brokaw, his assistant opens it and gets the skin version of anthrax, easy to treat, happens quite often in agricultural based countries, wool sorters, etc. The NY terrorism "expert" (actually an author) gets powder in the mail, I believe that it was tested negatively, so this doesn't count, but don't quote me at this point. Now a 5th incident at Microsoft Licensing division in Reno Nevada-at this point, I don't think anyone has tested positively, but the substance in the letter has.

If this is what we can expect from bioterrorism, I think I shall sleep very soundly at night. PFffffffft! The hype far exceeds the reality, just like Y2K. Back to life, people, back to life......nothing to fear here, just use your common sense.

You missed my point. This is Saddam, showing he can play the MAD game too, only using terrorists hiding on US soil, equipped with biological weapons. Think ahead. What are the chances that we will take out Saddam, once it becomes apparant he may be able to respond by creating unimaginable death and destruction on US soil? And what do you think the chances are that he organized or participated in an operation as audacious as the 9/11 attack (which almost destroyed the WH and Capitol, remember), without building an immunity clause into the larger plan?

Absolutely. Its real dangerous especially the inhalation anthrax which is the rare airborn form. Half the people in the country (probably the same half that elected Klinton) are not paying attention and do not know how bad it is.

Knock out travel? well sort of...rather they want people to fear going on about what would be normal business.

They are not aiming at 'communication' but rather media outlets so that they can get a lot more coverage.

Terrorism is about media and attention.

To be really honest, freaking out about this bio terror stuff (that is being caught already anyhow) and posting it on the web is just flaming the terrorists' fire and maybe making things worse...

The terrorists havent a clue about America. They think they can ruin they economy by driving planes in trade buildings. American people are the backbone of the economy. But they are aiming at the economy, travel and communications obviously.

For every case we hear about in the media, there are probably 2 or 3 dozen false alarms, hoaxes, or whatever you want to call them. I just listened to a call here on my radio that resulted in a hazmat team being dispatched. Real or not, these things appear to be consuming an increasingly large percentage of the time of local Fire Dept and law enforcement. I wonder if that is the terrorists' real intent.
