Real Cynic - "auto-immune" refers to a disease in which the body's immunce system attacks itself in some way. In my boyfriend's case, he has Guillain-Barre Syndrome where his immune system recognizes the myelin sheath on this nerves (a protein cover that speeds up nervous transmission to vital parts of the body like extremeties, et.) as being a foreign object like a virus or bacteria. So the immue system responds to what would otherwise be a normal presence in the body as a foreign object that needs to be attacked and gotten rid of.

There are a great many auto immune disorders - rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gall stones and kidney stones and eczema to name a very few.
One summer I drank quite a lot of Snapple cranberry iced tea and developed horrible kidney stones. I haven't had a drop of cranberry iced tea or cranberry juice since then - it's not an experience I want to repeat.

I really hope for the best for Rush.

Another strange trigger for Meniere's syndrome is when a person feels trapped. That is to say being in what one perceives as a no way out situation, such as a child trapped in an abuse situation, or an adult seemingly trapped in an unhappy situation, can trigger Meniere's, which can virtually wipe out hearing in one or more ears. Anyone experiencing sudden, sharp loss of hearing during these difficult times may take heart in the real possibility that their hearing may return. Avoid smoke at all costs if this may be your syndrome.
