And the cause is? Get real, we all know what the cause is. Arming nations like Saudi Arabia that terrorize their own people against developing ideas, religions, gods and arts of their own is the cause of international terrorism. You want to get rid of terrorism, then we need to nuke clean the middle East until it bows to inalienable civil rights demands within and without their territories. We are not talking about being the World Policeman, but being the world's great death... but the liberal utopia is against death and righteous battles of this scale.
So maybe in the end, the origin of terrorism is our lack of ability, as liberals, to communicate to others that terrorism is unacceptable. That's right, we are afraid to communicate because real communication requires sacrifice and blood shedding at times. We're a bunch of muted enuchs.

Ruthless counter measures have been tried through history, one of the best most modern ruthless counter measures was the French in Algeria, they crushed the terrorist movement, trouble was it kept comming back over and over again.
If you want to defeat a terrorist organisation with ruthless measures the only way is to wipe out the entite population base, other wise the young feed on the stories of the last effort and come back again.
Another way is to turn the host/target population against the terrorists, it takes longer and can be very hit amd miss.
There are no easy answers unless we agree that maybe Hitler had a point and implemented a genocidal option.
As a non believer I dont believe in the after life so if there is no other way I could with reservations go along with that option, or maybe a better option is to just pull out of that region.
With so many different movements and personalities they will go at each other in a way that would make the Balkans look like my Mothers last Bithday Tea.
