More on gas masks:
Re: expiration date for the filters on the mask.
The filters have a seal on them. As long as the seal is unbroken they'll last decades at least. If it's your mask, the seal can be broken and ya'll can practice fitting and breathing in fresh air w/o loss of capacity. Just put the cap on tight when you're done.
The active component in the mask is activated carbon. If you're handy with taking things apart and putting them back together, or improvising...activated carbon is regenerated by boiling in water for say ~30 min for most things.

There was an old British Army Field manual whose advice to surviving the Atom Bomb was,
"Don't be there when it goes off..."

My child and I are now on doxycycline - she had the beginning symptoms of inhalation and I have had symptoms of the intestional version. Lucky for us that I have ties into another health care worker who made the prescription. I think the spores might have come into our home on our mortgage statements from NJ (our home and all our rental properties), but the area public health care agency has told health care providers that no anthrax tests should be run unless the authorities are called in and anthrax testing is done and confirmed.

she had the beginning symptoms of inhalation and I have had symptoms of the intestional versionGood God! Let us know how you both are doing!
I assume it's anthrax? It's nasty stuff, but treatable, and they are better now with managing some of the side-effects.
It seems to me your story would qualify for a post in breaking news!

The problem is, with the idiotic health dept. warning, no health care providers around here are taking this anthrax-spreading problem seriously. I think they think any suspicious mail will look like the envelopes sent to Daschle et al. The problem, as I see it, is that mail is a good
fomite, and yes, our mortgage statements, not to mention a few catalogs or two, all come out of NJ! And bloody diarrhea isn't exactly, well, like the normal, flu-like output! :-/

I'll keep that "catalogs from NJ" in mind- we had a big fall-off in such mailings for about a week; they have resumed.
Bloody diarrhea is indeed a symptom to be alarmed about, especially in the young or very old- fluid loss & loss of blood volume... short of starting an IV drip, about all you can do at home is drink isotonic fluids ( Gatoraide ) and raise hell with your Doc. If it doesn't abate, head for the nearest Emergency Room. A good "in the field" indicator of how well the antibiotic is working is that within a few hours or a day of starting it, you "are amazed at how bad you felt a few hours ago."
Keep us advised- and consider posting your story. You don't have to be Hemingway to tell Who, What, When, Where, & Why- just lay the story out as it happened.

Bloody diarrhea is indeed a symptom to be alarmed about, especially in the young or very old- fluid loss & loss of blood volume. No fooling. Especially when I read about what can happen with intestinal anthrax via the New England Journal of Medicine and other places. Seems this type isn't even on the radar screen here because they think it can only be transmitted by eating food. I think in my case I got the spores through my nose, but swallowed them down into my stomach right away.
To: NotJustAnotherPrettyFace
Your theory makes sense- when I ran the sewage plant, the rule was "keep your hands below your collar" to avoid spreading any pathogens to eyes, nose, or mouth.
Here's a little more on smallpox:
