U.N. rights chief brands attacks "crimes of (Against) humanity"

GENEVA (Reuters) - The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, called on Tuesday for the world to recognise the suicide attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon as "crimes against humanity".

Such recognition would oblige all states to cooperate with both the United States and United Nations in bringing the perpetrators to justice, she told a news conference.

A global consensus including Arab and Muslim states would also signal that such "deliberate depravity" and targeting of civilians cannot be carried out in the name of Islam, she added.

Robinson, a former President of Ireland, urged the United States and European Union member states not to deprive minorities or asylum seekers of their civil liberties in the name of "tackling terrorism" after the attacks.

The U.S. administration accuses Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden of being behind the hijacking of commercial airliners which slammed into the New York and Washington landmarks, leaving 7,000 people dead or missing.

"We concluded in the Office of the High Commissioner that the events of September 11 undoubtedly constituted acts of terrorism but they also crossed a line.

"To us, the line that was crossed brought these acts into what we would characterise as crimes against humanity," Robinson declared.

"If these are crimes against humanity, every country would owe a duty to work with the United Nations, work with the United States, to bring the perpetrators to justice," she added.

Crimes against humanity were outlawed by the postwar Geneva Conventions but there has been no global body to prosecute those who commit them.

The International Criminal Court, which Robinson hopes will be set up in 12-18 months, says that crimes against humanity include the deliberate targeting of civilians. It will not, however, be able to take up cases the predate its existence.

FEARS BACKLASH

Robinson specifically said it would be "healthy" if the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) would join in denouncing the attacks as crimes against humanity so that no such future attacks could be carried out invoking Islamic law.

The OIC, representing the world's 1.2 billion Muslims in 55 states, has condemned the attacks as "barbaric and criminal".

Robinson said it was vital to follow up on the recent U.N. Conference against Racism, held in South Africa, and its call to fight the "evils of Islamophobia, anti-Arab sentiment and anti-Semitism" while protecting minorities such as refugees.

"This agenda can help us to retain a very important balance, so that in harnessing global abilities and capabilities to address acts of terrorism and terrorist organisations, we don't make the mistake of eroding civil liberties, of having the situation of refugees and asylum seekers greatly worsened," she said.

Referring to a meeting last week of EU justice and home affairs ministers -- which agreed bold anti-terrorism measures such as a common European arrest and extradition warrant -- she said:

"The outcome of that could be worrying for a further erosion of certain liberties in European countries and a harsher climate and context for refugees and asylum seekers."

Without naming names, she added: "I have no doubt that there are countries who are gearing up to tackle terrorism by clamping down on human rights defenders."

Agree wholeheartedly. GWB has an incredibly difficult task to perform : His administration has (rightly or wrongly) decided to try to combat terrorism with a coalition of countries, rather than alone. Our "allies" are insisting that GWB subordinate the US to the UN and sign on to all sorts of asinine measures supposedly supported by the so called 'international community' (Kyoto, the ICC, ABM , etc)as the price of their support. GWB has to NOT do this, and defend US sovereignty, while appearing to defer just enough to the UN to placate it and our "allies", in order to keep this coalition afloat.

IMHO it seems that the UN is just trying to get back "control" over the situation. They could care less about us. And I agree with other posters on this thread that I don't care WHAT they say- and the term "suicide" puts a victim satus on those MURDERERS! Twisting words again, typical. Been there, heard that. Get the UN OUT OF THE US! NOW. ps: NO MORE $

The UN Lefty's just cannot handle being tossed out in the cold. Bush and the US have been getting all the attention and the UN is standing there going, hey, we're here, we can help, WE WILL HELP!!!!

Not likely!! Everything the UN touches turns to Shiite and there is NO WAY IN HELL we should allow them to even get close to this. The UN is a has been and hopefully will just quietly die a quick death!!

This early 90's PBS documentary includes previously unknown videos of the clandestine activities of radical Islamic terrorist groups operating in the United States, and featured interviews with moderate Muslims
and federal counter-terrorism officials speaking for the first time about the magnitude of the threat posed by militant Muslim groups on U.S. soil.

This is a must see PBS video that is 1 hour long but plays thru streaming video on RealPlayer
so you don't have to wait for it to load on your computer.
Pay very close attention to the very begining where the CIA spent 3 BILLION dollars to help Afghanistan to defeat Russia during the 80's and how that defeat gave the terrorists the signal that they could beat
any nation, anywhere (watch and listen to the speech where the terrorists start their worldwide campaign) because they had just beaten Russia.
Also watch the documented evidence gathered in the late 80's of the threat to attacks in the US.

What a bunch of cr*p! Does anyone think anti-Americanism (like what the terrorists and Islamic countries foster) will ever be added to the fight against racism?

AMERICA AT WAR

An Introduction

In my June Veon Financial Services, Inc. economic newsletter, I analyzed the financial markets in the United States and concluded that what was needed to get not only the U.S. but the world out of the serious economic situation that it was in was a war. I wrote,

Using debt, it has been the American consumer who has kept world economies moving. At some point our economic foundation is going to crumble. When it unravels, the US will take a very hard and serious hit as never before in our financial history. What could save it? A war. War is above all an economic stimulus. Instead of a regional war, it might be something larger because now the world economy would come to a stand-still. Could it be that this idea is not so far from the truth when you consider the massive debt load of not only the United States, but every country in the world?

This new section is not to suggest that the United States government planned or had any input in the attacks on America. I was discussing in my newsletter the only alternative that the world has to stimulate a global economy based on fiat money and debt. War. I had absolutely no idea it would be on American soil.

When I turned t.v. on Tuesday and saw the first hole from the first plane, I knew immediately that the world had changed and that Americans would "lose the scales of naivete" which has blinded them from reality and truth for so long. Having covered 43 global conferences, I can tell you that this incident will be used by those who believe in world government to limit and change many of our current freedoms. This new section will be developed in the future, classifying writings and ideas into four categories: economic, political, spiritual, and social.

This new enemy of the 21st century is unlike any of the enemies of the past 20 centuries for it is "unseen." The terrorists will be aided by bio-terrorism and computer terrorism. What I can tell you is the Group of Seven/Group of Eight have been discussing how to counter-act terrorism since 1987. More specifically in 1996, the Political Group of Eight (P8) issued their "Forty Points to Counter-act Terrorism". Many of the initial suggestions on Tuesday eveningSeptember 11 had to do with those 40 points! Basically the implementation of those 40 points will lead to the tearing down of boarders from an intelligence and legal framework, thus helping to complete the new rules of the game which will accompany the International Criminal Court.

America will change and is changing as a result. For those of us who value our nationalism, the flag is more tattered than ever before. It is as war-torn as the flag which Gabriel Martin patched together in the movie "Patriot." It will be for you and I to determine how we stand in the stormy days ahead. God Bless You and God Bless America.

Thanks for the post.

Robinson said it was vital to follow up on the recent U.N. Conference against Racism, held in South Africa. . .

It's a good thing for the U.N. that the conference adjourned before the WTC attacks, or there would have been videos of the delegates dancing in the streets celebrating them.

I'm proud that our President has the moral clarity that is lacking at the U.N.

Who gives a flying bean bag what the U.N. and especially what Robinson thinks. She's the great sympathizer of the terrorists surrounding Israel in any event.

That couldn't be more evident. The USA is dead. The NWO has won-it now rules our WH, Congress, and Pentagon. There will be no rise from the ashes for us. God forgive me for losing hope, but I have. Dead Americans do not matter to our leaders any more. It is more important not to offend other nations, lose potential trade agreements, or lose foriegn oil. A few thousand deaths is a cheap price to pay for remaining politically correct.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

We are living in interesting times. Let's hope that it doesn't get too ugly in terms of our basic freedoms.
