The Fighting Side Of Me
Merle Haggard

I hear people talkin' bad
About the way we have to live here, in this country
Harpin' on the wars we fight
An' gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be.

An' I don't mind 'em switchin' sides an'
Standin' up for things they believe in
When they're runnin' down my country, man
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me!

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down the way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.

If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'
If you're runnin' down my country man
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me!

I read about some squirrely guy
Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin'
And I wonder just how long
The rest of us can count on bein' free.

They love our milk an' honey
But they preach about some other way of livin'
When they're runnin' down my country, hoss
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me!

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down our way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.

If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'
When you're runnin' down my country, man
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me!

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me
Runnin' down our way of life
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.

If you don't love it, leave it
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'
If you're runnin' down my country, man
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me!

From Merle Haggard's Greatest Hits, posted to FR a couple months ago by jrherreid, here: http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3b5e3a106c3d.htm

Thought it appropriate to post again.

If you're runnin' down our website, Hoss,
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

I (like most Americans) never heard of Lew Rockhead until someone started posting his drivel on your website...

Is LewRockwell.com the place where male writers post who were not cute and sexy enough to be hired by Raimondo at Antiwar.com?

"Look at the past 25 years — we went downhill, and if people don't realize it, they don't have their [expletive] eyes on ... In 1960, when I came out of prison as an ex-convict, I had more freedom under parolee supervision than there's available to an average citizen in America right now... God almighty, what have we done to each other?"

I like the song, too, but hope that this isn't a hint that we have to check our critical thinking or nonpopular opinions at the door. Are we supposed to support any and all plans that come from this administration? You know darn well that every thought that would come out of clinton' mouth would be examined and debated and challenged by freepers. Is this administrtion immune because it's W and not algore?

Drinking koolaide makes me nauseous.

Recent events have me thinking about another great Merle song, "Are The Good Times Really Over (I Wish A Buck Was Still Silver)," which was written after four years of the Carter administration:

I wish a buck was still silver, and it was back when the country was strong,
Back before Elvis, and before the Vietnam war came along,
Before the Beatles and yesterday, when a man could still work, and still would,
is the best of the free life behind us now,
and Are The Good Times Really Over For Good.
Are we rollin' downhill like a snowball headed for hell.
With no kind of chance for the flag or the liberty bell.
I wish a Ford or a Chevy, would still last ten years like they should.
Is the best of the free life behind us now,
And Are The Good Times Really Over For Good.
I wish Coke was still cola, and a joint was a bad place to be.
It was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV.
Before Microwave ovens, when a girl could still cook, and still would,
Is the best of the free life behind us now,
and Are The Good Times Really Over For Good.
Stop rollin' downhill like a snowball headed for hell.
Standup for the flag, and let's all ring the liberty bell.
Let's make a Ford and a Chevy that'll still last ten years like they should.
The best of the free life is still yet to come,
And the good times ain't really over for good.

LewRockwell.com is a running joke around here. Being insulted by them has to feel as good as being insulted by jesse jackson.

Keep up the great work and thanks for the song.

Freedom for those who have fought for it,
has a flavor the protected shall never savor.

Don't know who wrote it, but sure applies.

And it's only going to get worse as all sides over react.

As a conservative, I am naturally wary of concentrations of power and the Homeland Security stuff scares me.
