Well, as I thought about it while it was being sung, it occurred to me that if its conditions were true, then there probably wouldn't be all sorts of troubles that exist in the world today (that is, the world as it actually is); however, this is all on the same intellectual level as "Imagine if fire weren't hot, then we wouldn't get burned!" and "Imagine if there were no such thing as metabolism we wouldn't ever get fat" and "If we could drink salt water and feed on rocks, there wouldn't be any world hunger any more (I guess except hunger for world rocks)." Even when this song came out when I was in high school I thought it was fatuous.

The lines...

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

...have a communist bent to them. The rejection of God and religion at the beginning and the verse I just posted come across that way.

I think it's another one of those rumors flying around on freerepublic.com.

Yeah. Like the one you posted above about Clear Channel banning that idiotic song?
I wish they had.

Imagine some Hollywood corporate executives with a shred of patriotism.</font size>

Lennon was against war and was for peace in the world

Just think, he might have been able to have performed the song himself, he had embraced his 2nd amendment rights to arm himself. Bush left out one ideology on the "Unmarked grave of failed lies" list; PACIFISM.

Seen on another thread was a Freeper suggesting he wanted a T-shirt saying "Give War a Chance". I'll take mine in blue or canary, thank you...

"Why would you get angry at them? You don't think it's a good cause? Donating their time in very short notice to raise millions of dollars for the victims?"

The money now appears not to be going to the victims and may even find its way, albeit indirectly, to their killers. See Post #26.

What a surprise! (NOT)

You have a point—but what the heck. These people get a lot of things in life—the one thing we have is the right to criticize them.
The main thing I had against the show was it’s whiney dour atmosphere. Except for Tom Petty’s “WontBackDown” the songs were dirges. It’s time for rousing, uplifting music. I thought the music at Barbara Olson’s memorial service was much more inspiring—and I’m not religious.

And about “Imagine”—always loved John Lenon—but the hypocrisy of putting out that song at the same time the Beatles were in a huge fight and couldn’t even stand to be in the same room with each other—countries are supposed to hug and get along, but the Beatles couldn’t manage it?

I didn't watch the wretched telethon! It just didn't feel right. As a former New Yorker now living in NJ, I kinda resented Hollyweird horning in on this horrific disaster.

"I just believe in me... Yoko and me... and that's reality."

That's idolatry if you ask me.

The only thing Lennon knew about peace was how to indugle his pathetic little appetites in it. He didn't know the first thing about how peace is created and maintained. Better men--anonymous and unsung men--fought and died to achieve that end.

Preach it! Bumping this.

Imagine all the people Living for today
And no religion too

Imagine no possessions

These are the phrases that remind us of communism. Churches and religion are discouraged, if not outright banned, in communistic countries. The STATE becomes the caretaker of the people; religion is a threat to the government.

The "no possessions" part is a no-brainer. By its definition, communism means "goods held in common," it's a "collective."

Now I don't want to offend or anything, and I don't mean this sarcastically, but are you serious when you say you don't see a connection between Lennon's song and communism???? Mind if I ask how old you are?

Add to the fact that Lennon was one of THE wealthiest performers in history. I guess he couldn't imagine no bank account.

I'm certain his beliefs have adjusted to the new information received since 1981.

"Learn how to read lyrics,"

Learn how to look up the meaning of words in the dictionary. John Lennon was an open Socialist/Communist, and many of his songs reflect this. His path to "peace" has been tried many times, and always with disasterous and lethal results. You will note that while Lennon was espousing the ideas in the song "Imagine", he was one of the more than wealthy individuals on the planet. If he really believed the BS he wrote, he would have died a pauper.

Go learn some history.
