To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under Heaven. This sermon had its uses, and still continues to proclaim a part of the truth that no one likes to hear, least of all sinners. God is a God of Love, to be sure, but He is also a Holy God, a Just God, and has surely pronounced judgement on sin, and that judgement is death. Not pretty, not all warm and fuzzy, but true nonetheless. Those who reject Christ's gift, His redemptive work on the cross, doom themselves to everlasting torment, death, and the consequences of their own sinfulness. They have no recourse, having rejected God's love and gift of salvation. C'mon, Sue, you know that! For some, this sermon is the only way they will get a clear picture of the precariousness of their position before God outside of Christ. They would never be reached with "Jesus loves you and has a wonderful paln for your life..."
