The "freedom versus security" tradeoff is a false choice.

The WTC attack did not occur because Americans have too much freedom.

It occurred because:

  1. U.S. border/immigration policy (or selective enforcement thereof) allowed known terrorists to enter and remain in the country while attending flight school.

  2. The terrorists were able to gain access to the cockpits of the hijacked aircraft.

The fact that William Cohen, Dick Gephardt and other statists propound that the only solution to terrorism is to "trade freedom for security" betrays the reality that their true agenda is to curtail freedom.

Those are technicalities, which should be addressed. It occured because they knew they could strike fear in our hearts, change our way of life, and force us to magnify and solidify our loyalties in the middle east.

Amen.

I was really surprized at the speed with which our gov't bots put forth before the American people the need to give up personal liberties for national security. Yet, except for a need to tighten our borders, I have heard absolutely nothing about an immediate revision of our imigration policy.

How many of the terrorists were American citizens?

Why aren't illegal aliens being rounded up & detained for deportation?

Why are illegal aliens encouraged & allowed to violate the law of this land and move & live here illegally?

Why are visas given to persons that publicly spew their hatred for America & its people? NOW we see that WE are training people to destroy us & I still have heard of no reform of immigration policy.

Yes we have a right to free speech. WE being Americans in America.

Why are Americans expected to pay dearly with our liberties for the actions of people that are not American & for a gov't that regularly blames & punishes the innocent because of what the guilty have done?

What good will a national ID card for Americans do when our enemies will not be required to have one because they are not American? What good will security checkpoints on our streets do when how many of this week's terrorists were known to and ignored by the agencies that give us national 'security'?

As to gov't secured airports, we do not have a RIGHT to fly. Our airports should have been made a permanent matter of national security many years ago, IMO, when highjackings were commom.

If, for whatever reason, I do not want to be searced to board a flight, then I can choose not to fly. WE do not have a RIGHT to get from point A to point B as fast as possible!

For those of you falling for the gov'ts 'need to give up rights' hype, please clarify in your mind the differences between rights & privileges. Are those same rights being taken away from nonAmerican citizen terrorists? Tell me how your giving up Constitutional RIGHTS (not priviliges), would have protected us from this attack?

These are questions I am posing to my elected officials. I'll let you know what responses I get from Michigan's bunch of socialists that have sworn to uphold the Constitution, but don't hold your breath. One (Levin) never responds, the other two (Stabenow, Rivers) take up 6 weeks to respond.
