PESHAWAR, Pakistan --As Maulawi Gul Rahman prepared for lunchtime prayers yesterday, he donned his ragged scholar's robe, stroked his tangled beard and pondered the question of what the effect of American military retaliation against Osama bin Laden would be.

"Muslims around the world, from north, south, east and west, would wage war against the United States," said the maulawi, a senior priest, who considers himself a moderate by the region's standards. "It would be holy war, our duty."

>>Words fail me.<<

I don't know about that, but the surely confuse you.

>>You seriously think that responding to 5000+ deaths, and another 5000+ injuries with a handful of F**KING ARRESTS will prevent future assaults?!?<<

For a teacher you sure seem to have a problem with reading comprehension. Show me just ONE place where I have called for arrests! I want bin Laden's head brought back in a burlap sack and mounted on one of the spikes that is on the White House fence.

Plus we can torture them if we find out they are Jihad sympathetic.

What does Fitx think they will be AFTER we torture them,US sympathetic?

I know we all are feeling the need to do something, anything to avenge this but we either learned some thing from our experiences or we didn't.I'm trying my best to keep a level head and not bring on unintended consequences.

Are we Americans or Not? Is torture a part of the American Lexicon? I hope to God not.

I'm fully confident that George W. will do whatever he has to do to accomplish his goals successfully, and that he won't mess up like Clinton and Carter. It's the only way he'll see four more years in the Prez Palace.

They don't know what "holy war" means.........yet.

True. They probably aren't completely aware of the meaning behind the singing of The Battle Hymn of the Republic at the memorial service yesterday. The British memorial service ended with the same hymn.

Perhaps we should send these idiots the words to this song. Maybe they'll get a clue.

It was noted on Fox News that most of the terrorists came in under Saudi visas! I said this yesterday and someone thought I was crazy: "round up all non-citizens from that part of the world and politely, deport them".

Roger that! It seems like the FR posters who want to nuke millions of innocent people are the majority here, and if this is true we have already lost America, regardless of how the war comes out.

There is a former Afghan field commander named Abdul Haq who had quite an organization during the war with the Soviets. He is pro-Western, criticized the US policy of letting Pakistan's ISI run the war, and warned of mullahs sending recruits to Kashmir after the war ended. He has criticized the Taliban and his wife and son were murdered a few years ago by unknown assailants.

From time to time he has been mentioned by US diplomats as able to lead a new government. We may hear of him in the weeks ahead if the US is interested in a constructive solution. But he will have zero support if the US starts massive reprisals.

The Paks won't allow for staging out of their country, so where would the staging bases be?

Bagram air base, built by the Soviets and less than 40 miles from Kabul, is presently held by the opposition Northern Alliance. It could be turned over easily if the other factors for local support were in place.

Nice visual! Thanks! Can we pay $50 to spit on it? Proceeds go to the WTC survivors' fund.

You're right, you were not one of those just looking for arrests. My apologies. But still, exchanging 10 of theirs for 5000+ of ours is not acceptable, nor will it deter future attacks.

Persia has plenty of mountains too, and Alexander's troops scaled cliffs to take them out. He turned around in India, not Afghanistan.

This guy should definitely be worked into our overall strategy. The best way to get bin Laden and the other terrorists is to have the people in the countries where they are hiding to go after them for us,with the clear understanding that all we want to recover is a dead body.

It will if you make it widely know that you are going to specifically target the leaders, and will offer no mercy and no quarter. It won't take long before nobody wants to be a terrorist leader. Snakes without heads are harmless.

I have suggested on other threads that we "freeze" the terrorists in place by informing the ambassadors of certain nations that the city of Mecca now has some ICBMs and SLBMs targeted on it, and one attack on us will mean its destruction, following sufficient time to evacuate the civilian population. While they ruminate over that, on the way back home, as their diplomatic credentials would also be revoked, we could round up the terrorists here, strengthen our interior defenses, while spying out where bin Laden and the other terrorist camel jockeys are hiding. Then hit them with a fuel air bomb. At that time, we wouldn't have to worry about his soldiers in this country exploding a suitcase nuke. After declaring war, the terrorists in this country would be enemies, so they could be tried by courts martial once apprehended. Following conviction, we could wring information out of them before the firing squad did their job.

Exchanging 5000+ lives for 10 seems like offering TONS of mercy to me... and especially to the Jihadists who are used to shedding innocent blood as a weekend sport.

bin Laden is a hero to the Jihadists (note their jubilation in the streets), and will be a martyr after his execution (they're a dime a dozen in Arabia). There is no deterrent there. It's an incentive! Failure to respond with brutality will simply invite more attacks. Let the liberals criticize us through history, in their warm armchairs, safe from enemies... that's what they'll do anyway.

That method of bringing down the Russion copters was reported several times during the war. I merely repeated the story. They claimed that many times, the muhajeddin did wait until the copters were very low, then fired rifle grenades from well camoed cover. The history of the war is replete with stories of how the copters became the prime targets of the Afganis. Stingers helped too, but they tried to use them mainly against jets.

I can't think of a better way of turning every single Muslim in the world into a terrorist who hate us with a passion. Just ask yourself how Catholics would feel if somebody were to threaten to nuke the Vatican,or other Christians and Jews would feel if the Arabs threatened to nuke Jurelusem.

You don't defeat terrorists by creating more of them.

I agree mountain passes, bridges, all routes in and out should be bombed to isolate them. Then we could soften them up by carpet-bombing the entire country with canned Spam. With no new food supplies they might get hungry enough to eat it, thus condemning themselves to eternal damnation (not to mention the temporary hell they'd go through getting it down).

Seriously, they need to be attacked economically. They are financed by their opium trade and according to experts I heard today, they have tons of the stuff warehoused for future despoilation of the West. Somehow get to those warehouses and destroy them, then use Paraquat on their poppy fields. I have a feeling there'll be time enough for nukes when we get into it with Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Syria, et al. Bibi Netanyahu has already urged Israel to go public with warnings about its nuclear stockpiles. This is going to get very ugly, fast. And there are a billion Muslims anxious to die in a Jihad.

If that's the case, why is he always hiding, and why wasn't HE flying one of the suicide planes?
