Bush not asking for Declaration of War
President George W. Bush

Posted on 09/12/2001 8:04:51 AM PDT by Heisenburger

We all just saw Bush on TV talking about investigating this tragedy and generally pussy-footing around the issue. What Bush is forgetting is that we are sure of who has done this, and there is no reason anymore for investigations. If Bush will not ask Congress for a Declaration of War against Afghanistan, I say Congress should force his hand by passing such a declaration immediately.

Just a small detail...but who do you declare war against?

All known terrorist organizations and the countries which harbor them. If we happen to get the wrong one (i.e. not involved in yesterday's attack) at some point or another, then bummer. Oops. Sorry about that. We'd have gotten around to you eventually.

This is a comprehensive war (Muslim extremism vs. the civilized world) and needs to be treated as such.

You declare war against all known terrorist organizations. And you name them by name. And you announce that you will have no regard for the borders or governments of the countries that house them, and refuse to turn them over.

I'm not sure that this would be Constitutional. A declaration of war should be specific, not just against "Bad Guys" the world over.

But I saw that the Congress is talking about passing a "Declaration of Unity" pleeze, just shut up and send some wet operatives over to interview some of these bastards.

It won't be a two thousand year war if we kill them all in the first week. Sycophants like you can be rounded up later.

We already know for a fact the names of many terrorist groups and the countries they hide-out in.

The complete destuction of any one of these groups makes the us and the world a little safer.

Suppose we go and destroy the terrorist state of Libya? What are these groups going to think the next time one of their compadres venture out on their own?

I understood as "this is an act of war". I have to believe that they are going to treat it as such. Dubya has never been one to parse words. I will join you in the chorus of gripes when proven otherwise.

Americans need to drop our notions of civilization and virtue and innocence when dealing with the lesser peoples inhabiting the terrorist world. That world, like ours, includes businessmen, soldiers, housewives, and children - but they are not like us.

They haven't been trained in political correctness and tolerance, they never pray for peace, they don't love their enemy. They are the embodiment of HATRED. They speak the language of hate 24/7, they pray for the death of their enemies and they cheer violence, offering their children as martyrs.

We cannot apply our Constitutional rights to them. They don't want them. They want us to die. They want to celebrate carnage. Rights? They don't speak the language of rights unless they are making demands and telling lies.

I cringed every time I saw the Clintons make nice with Yassir Arafat and accept personal gifts from him and give over millions of American dollars to his people in exchange for a peace he would never deliver. By delaying the defeat of the people who hate America, we have left ourselves open to contempt and attack. There is no peace to be negotiated - there never was - there never will be.

When we fight against terrorism, as we must now, we will not fight for peace. We will fight for the annihilation of our enemy. There is a difference.

A declaration of War is no small thing, and it should not be taken lightly or in the heat of the moment. Even after Pearl Harbor we waited until the next day.

The problem with a declaration of war is that it provides forewarning. I believe that the president should continue on his current course, asking for increased funding authority, and take action as CinC under the War Powers Act. If and when further authority is required or desired in order to achieve maximum effect we should then and only then declare war against appropriate named soveriegn countries.

That means that if Afghanistan, the Sudan, the UAE, Algeria, Libya etc. attempt to prevent or impede unilateral actions against known terrorists and conspirators that they will then fall under the harboring provision of his statements. A Declaration of War based on the grounds of an alliance with known enemies of the United States would then be appropriate. The President does not need a DoW to act, he only needs it to sustain action or if a head of state (as recognized by the US DoS is a potential/likely casualty.

Well obviously against terrorists themselves and whichever nation is harboring them.

Let's for the sake of argument that Bin Laden orhestrated this attack from Afganistan (sp?) with financial support from Iraq and Syria. The United States should formally declare war against all three nations.

Pussy-footing around is a phrase that refers to how lightly cats walk, rintense, not a body part.

In effect, you may as well have declared war on the world. -- Calm down, we will get these bastards without starting WWIII. -- Maybe.

Sorry, Riley, but the original poster said this:

but if he's going to be a pussy about this, then someone else has got to step up.

I didn't see any reference in the original post about pussy-footing around...

If I were in charge, I would phone up Afghanistan officials and say, "we know you are harboring this guy and his group, we'll give you 24 hours to produce him to us, and then we come in and take him out and you along with him for not producing him" But, then again, I'm not a national security advisor, just princess leah!

From the Constitution, Article I, Section 8 on the scope of legislative power (please note the bold areas that would apply to terrorists, the pirates of today one might argue):

To define and punish piracies and felonies committed on the high seas, and offenses against the law of nations;

To declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water;

To raise and support armies, but no appropriation of money to that use shall be for a longer term than two years;

To provide and maintain a navy;

To make rules for the government and regulation of the land and naval forces;

To provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the union, suppress insurrections and repel invasions;

To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the militia, and for governing such part of them as may be employed in the service of the United States, reserving to the states respectively, the appointment of the officers, and the authority of training the militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

Early in our history the US declared war against the "Barbary pirates" of North Africa. They were no less nebulous than today's, typical, scum-sucking Islamic terrorists.
