The moderators are all long time and well respected members of the forum and they are trustworthy people. The entire forum is based on trust.

Hey, I never profited from any "Free Whatever" campaign.

In fact, it lead to my willing loss of five big ones to Jim...

Hear, hear!

I'm glad you found a way to get outta Dodge for a while, Jim. I was starting to worry about you, but you looked great at the AZ lunch.

And the payoff.

You should tag that up (I think some version of everything in there is doable with HTML) and stick it in the sandbox. Funny and demonstrative. Don't ask me for help though, never got very good with HTML and have forgotten most of what little I knew.

No, we can't read minds - nor would we want to. In the immortal words of a wizened Okefenokee swamp philosopher, "Those who steal my purse steal gold. Those who read my mind steal trash."

Just trying to do the best we can to keep the forum from spiraling downwards into a mass of flames, insults and vulgar postings (ala the news groups). Thanks very much for your support. Regards, Jim Robinson

"Mama_Bear, can I follow in your "tracks"? I agree with what you said! : )"

You sure can, but watch your step. :-)

I am shocked by all the gullible comments on this thread. Somebody puts up a post about "moderators", which no one has ever heard of before, and you all meekly believe it? Where's the critical analysis that's supposed to be the hallmark of Free Republic???

If we apply Occam's Razor, isn't it much more likely that this "moderator" story is a total fabrication? Think about it. To the extent that potential disruptors believe Jim Robinson is backed up by an entire corps of round-the-clock moderators, they'll be much less likely to try anything than if they believe that FR is entirely dependent on one overworked person.

Training and supervising a bevy of moderators would involve a lot of additional work and entail some significant risk. But inventing a mysterious, secretive organization of moderators, whose most important characteristic is their total anonymity, involves very little work and zero risk, so long as disruptors can be conned into believing it.

Of course not all disruptors are stupid. Some might suspect the charade, were it not for posts such as this one which purportedly "expose" the scheme, but do so in a highly paranoid fashion that has the counter-effect of discrediting the whole idea.

Speaking only of user-related stuff:

Moderators do not have access to IPs, E-mail, nor passwords. They have little more access to information than yourself. (they have a scratch pad to jot down notes, and know how many articles and replies you have posted.)

Junior moderators can: suspend a user from 1-7 days

Senior moderators can: ban and nuke users (nuke deletes posts and bans).

Both suspend and ban require the moderator to enter a notice to the user, which should explain the reason they've found themselves without posting privs.

Nuke is reserved for hit-n-run style disruptors, you know the type.

All three, suspend, ban, and nuke, require the moderator to make an additional comment which stays with the user record. Whereas the notice is directed to the user, this comment is directed to those who oversee moderator actions. (Namely Jim and the Captain moderator.)

My best advice is to wait till this thread dies, somewhere around 500+ replies, and check to see who hasn't posted. Betcha Trannie is one o' them!

I think I can settle this right now.
