Republicans Want Sen. Smith to Step Aside
The GOP is urging Sen. Bob Smith of New Hampshire not to seek re-election, and Rep. John Sununu will announce his intention to seek Smith's seat in late October, Fox News reported today.
Smith is considered the most vulnerable senator, and Republicans are worried, especially with the looming retirements of Sens. Phil Gramm of Texas, Jesse Helms of North Carolina and Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, and the possible departure of Tennessee's popular Fred Thompson.
Polls show that the New Hampshire Democrats' probable senatorial nominee, Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, would trounce Smith but could lose to Sununu.
Sununu's announcement had been expected last month, but he delayed it so Republican leaders could try to get Smith to bow out, Fox reported.

Smith came within two percentage points of losing in 1996. He's a goner, even if he runs.

If you don't call what Smith did bolting the party you're probably dumb enough to have voted for Clinton.
Yes, you are right. He pitched a fit on the Senate floor, burned bridges. then came back with his hat in his hand. These people like Smith and Buchanan who can't get the nomination of a party, leave for another party. People don't forget that and hate tantrums. And that's what it was.
I still can't get over all these people who think they are qualified to be be president and then have a tantrum when they don't get elected. John McPain comes to mind although he didn't leave the party. He just votes like he did.
To each his own. But I do remember Goldwater who lost an election but not his principles. He set the stage for a conservative future and Reagan. Which is now being 'coalitioned' away.
If you stand for something you will never really win by compromising. You win by moving the pile in your direction and not moving the pile in the opposite direction through 'governing coalitions' - that is an automatic loss

BS. Reagan "compromised" with conservative Democrats and moderate Republicans to build a governing coalition -- his agenda was: 1) tax cuts; 2) defeat the commies; and 3) cut back government. He got the first two, but not the last one; his attitude was "win the fights you can win -- all else in good time."
Nobody admires Barry Goldwater more than I do, but his loss of the 1964 election set back the cause of conservatism 16 years. A lot of Republicans tend to forget that in the afterglow of Reaganism.

Smith's opposed to drilling in ANWR, or offshore, anywhere. That makes no sense.
Does it matter that his was a conservative rift, rather than a socialist/democrat rift?
If it makes you feel REEEEAAAL important to insult fellow freepers by suggesting 1)they're stupid, and 2)(more importantly) that they may have voted for Clinton then just fine.
I thought this place was for conservatives, not for Party SHEEP. Incidentally, I've always been a republican and always voted so.

Do you know Smith has singlehandedly stopped bill after bill that tried liberalized government funding for abortion and do you care?
Bob Smith is a Patriot like the founding fathers compared to must of the other men in either house of Congress.
