From cocktail-party pragmatists to Constitution-abolishing ‘theory bros,’ these groups are steering America’s largest socialist organization in its breakout year

Democratic socialists are having a breakout year, including a win in a mayoral primary in Providence, R.I., on Wednesday. Though many of the group’s contenders have fallen short, candidates recommended or endorsed by a chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America have tallied several high-profile congressional primary victories and about 100 state and local primary wins, according to an August Brookings Institution analysis.

Yet the public is still trying to learn what the movement believes, how it is organized and the level of its followers’ involvement.

For many on the left, aligning with the DSA will be the culmination of their ideological journey. But for a certain subset, that is just the start. Once inside the DSA tent, they can go deeper and sign up for one of its many competing caucuses.

There are caucuses for those who yearn to make New York City more like Stockholm and others for Marxist-Leninists seeking permanent revolution. And many more.

In the broader view, you are both correct.

The D party has been gradually corrupted in the past 65 years by "anti-MAGA" elements. The earlier typical R-D cycle can today be accurately expressed by a rising trendline - one in favor of the D's that is accelerating at both the state and federal levels at an increasing rate.

The D's have very recently promised to fundamentally transform the Constitution, as did Obama, and there is every reason they will make every effort as soon as possible to do so at the legislative level. *

Perhaps the only question now is whether we will be as determined, effective and successful as we were when we overcame England's rule.

*With approval of 2/3rds of the states, Congress does not need presidential approval to amend the Constitution. Also with 2/3ds in each chamber it can "stack" the USSC.
