The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to pay $800 million to settle the claims brought against the church by some 1,300 people who say they faced sexual abuse from clergy members and lay workers.
Jeff Anderson, a lawyer whose firm represents more than 250 of the plaintiffs, said the settlement was finalized, pending signed paperwork, and that all plaintiffs had agreed to the settlement.
In an email sent to priests of the archdiocese on Saturday afternoon and shared with NPR, Archbishop Ronald Hicks also said the deal had not yet been signed but that an agreement had been reached with plaintiffs and their attorneys.
"We are on the verge of being able to, please God, bring some measure of healing and reconciliation to all victim-survivors," Hicks wrote in the email. "This agreement will also allow the archdiocese to turn its full attention once again to its mission of preaching the Gospel, healing the sick, caring for the poor and needy, welcoming the stranger, and educating our children."
Anderson says that following the agreement, his clients have expressed mixed feelings of both sorrow about the abuse they experienced as well as relief that the legal fight is over.
"The first is a real sense of relief and achievement," Anderson said, and "the belief that having stood up at least they have now a chance to move forward and have done something to protect others in the future and clean up the archdiocese of New York."
The agreement was first reported by The New York Times.
This is one of the largest settlements in the Catholic church related to sexual abuse claims. In 2024, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed to a $880 million settlement to victims of sexual abuse by its clergy.
In December 2025, the Archdiocese of New York agreed to mediation to settle the 1,300 sexual abuse claims and said it had laid off staff and planned to sell some of its Manhattan properties in effort to raise $300 million to pay survivors.

I know almost nothing about Catholicism.
I do know my non-denominational Christian church is absolutely full of people that used to be Catholic...and the ones I know don’t say much positive about it.

more to the agreement?
Sounds like they left RELIGION and found JESUS. 🙏🇺🇸
The Catholic Church has been hijacked by radical leftists. They are entrenched and run the church. Many of the members have left in frustration.
800M !??
How much money does that church have!?? Or does the whole nations affiliates have to participate in the payout?

My urban diocese had NO sexual abuse claims against its dozens of high schools
Why? Because from the 1960s-1990s, at the height of the infiltration of seminaries by perverts of the Lavender mafia, our diocesan high schools were run by a former Marine who joined the priesthood after being in the Pacific in WWII
I knew the man, and met one of his secretaries at his funeral.
To put it simply, once he got word of a priest acting inappropriately, he confronted that priest immediately and advised them if he heard one more such rumor, the offender would face his wrath here on earth, in the form of a beating, before he faced God’s
Now that’s a shepherd who protected his flock from wolves.
I love tough Christians, and obviously even Christian organizations need toughness in them to keep them from drifting away into the negative.
This is meaningless unless it is accompanied with excommunication of the offending priests and turning them and all info over to civil authorities.
F@#$ the bullshitte about Christian forgiveness. This pedo protection in the Church is a betrayal of Gawd. If Christians are not willing to deal with offenders against their Gawd they deserve a Moslem conquest. DESERVE!!
I don’t ever remember any scandals growing up.
The cases should’ve been prosecuted as they happened, not covered up.
Can 8 yo Brides sue the Mooselimb Leadres?
Or Ultra Orthodox kids sue the Pedos among them?
Or Amish farm kids get any relief from their predators?
Religion shouldn’t be a shield from Justice.
The victims will buy them and lease/lend them back to the Archdiocese so that they don't have to evict all those renters.
The only only change is that the victims get a cut of the donations and the rent.
It's like reparations for Catholics. $800 million ( about $8 million after various hands haves dipped into the cookie jar and grabbed their cut) paid in monthly installments.
You are so very lucky! As a recovering Catholic from early childhood, I have refused to step foot in any Catholic Church for any reason for the last 48 years. They’re disgusting and corrupt… Always have been. They don’t preach squat about Jesus as our Lord and Savior. But you can talk to a priest and tell that MAN all of your sins and he’ll talk to the big guy for you…and keep your confessions totally anonymous wink wink

I have been considering just such a move for a few years now!
The Church is being overthrown from within! No one in the inner circle is strong enough, or brave enough to call it out!
