A California realtor has been arrested at LAX after being accused of spying for China.
Wanying Zhang, also known as "Heather," was busted at the airport Sunday as she tried to board a flight to Shanghai.
The 34-year-old, who lives in Irvine, Orange County, is accused of working with handlers from the People's Republic of China to surveil the son of Taiwan's president Ching-Te Lai.
'We have a problem with Beijing using Chinese-Americans for their own purposes in California," AG Bill Essayli said. "They are using them for their own foreign affairs because they are playing the long game to get a competitive advantage over us. She wasn't spying against us, she was allegedly conducting a campaign on behalf of Beijing."
A criminal complaint released by the FBI Sunday shows texts between her and other alleged agents about tracking Ting-Yu Lai in Seattle, Washington, where he works for electronics giant Philips.
Surveillance camera photographs also allegedly caught Zhang sitting in a car with an accomplice taking pictures of his house and close relatives.
It is the latest Chinese spying scandal to rock California, months after the mayor of Arcadia was snared in a secret propaganda and fake news campaign for the PRC.
And it comes as tensions between China and Taiwan remain high, with US officials fearing Beijing will try to invade the island at some point next year.

All Chinese origin people, whether naturalized citizens or children or grandchildren are potential, even likely, agents of the CCP. They have relatives in China who are hostages to their “good” behaviour.” They should be barred from any sensitive employment. Moslems, too, of whatever origin, them just because they are Moslems and may hearken the requirements of the Koran at any time.

Probably true. Hubby had TS and Q Clearances for his career as DoD contractor. We had a lovely Chinese family in our church whom we would have loved to be social with. We steered clear, though. Otherwise, DH would have had to report each get-together to superiors.
Considering how many issues like this one have arisen recently, it appears that TPTB aren’t as strict as they were in the ‘90s.

Ferdinand Marcos was living in Taiwan and flew home from Taoyuan (then CKS Airport, de-Chiang-ing Taiwan is part of the ruling party) when he was assassinated on the tarmac of Manila International Airport.
The mayor of Taipei, Chiang Wan-an (Wayne), is the son of Chiang Ching-Kuo’s illegitimate son (which 14 years after the Taiwanese President’s death, was uncovered and recognised as his father).
Willie’s wife and son live in Seattle where he works for Philips NV.

Why would somebody living in California be participating in tracking someone in Seattle?
Mr. Lai is the son of William Lai, the President of the Republic of China, and employed by Philips, NV. This is a political attack by Peking of the opponent.
