As the university system increasingly becomes a wildly expensive bastion of anti-Western sentiment, key figures in Silicon Valley are betting on alternatives to higher education. They argue that even the Ivy League is no longer producing the best candidates — nor are they even accepting some of the most qualified students.
“It used to be the case that you could rely on somebody who went to an Ivy or Ivy-equivalent to be top notch,” said Jordan Hirsch, who runs Palantir’s semester-long intensive Meritocracy Fellowship, which accepts high school graduates.“But that’s not the case anymore… we suspected that there was a lot of talent being missed.”
Palantir has become a pioneer of the effort to offer alternatives to the conventional four-year undergraduate degree — and now it’s planning to double the size of its third semester-long intensive.
The company’s four-month fellowship begins with a five-week crash course in Western civilization — studying philosophers like Aristotle and heroes like Churchill — with classes taught by visiting professors, journalists, and researchers alongside executives such as CEO Alex Karp and CTO Shyam Sankar.

It's time for "Colleges" and "Universities" to return to what they were before World War II. Get the government and its money out of education.
“Train new employees?”
That’s blasphemy in modern corporate jargon.
They want someone to walk in the first day of work knowing their entire system so they can start being productive immediately.
Which of course never happens.
Ivy League’s still have very smart kids
They have a finely honed system of evaluating applicants’ intelligence as well as social status, and cultivating that.
The problem - an Ivy League education is now completely devoid of any training of morality, responsibility or humility. These are also forms of “intelligence” which make an excellent employee, teammate, and leader
Some kids may still have these from their family or natural intelligence, but overall, arrogance and self-regard from the Ivy’s are off-the-charts. Its why they must be “re-trained.”
It is time to get “government” out of education. And these tech titans could help if they really wanted to.
National and regional HVAC, plumbing, electrician and other trade companies had to do the same thing over the past couple of decades. They hired smart, dedicated kids out of states like North and South Dakota and trained them for jobs on the East Coast and West Coast. They flew them to training schools and housed them for weeks before paying for them to move to jobs on the East and West coasts. Its amazing how badly our primary and higher education system is at preparing young people for the jobs - both trade jobs and more intellectual jobs - that actually exist. Between the ever-increasing tuition to get useless degrees and the fact that companies are spending a fortune to train young people themselves now, I am waiting for our education system to collapse. The day is coming and is well-deserved.
Colleges and Universities prior to WW II were mostly divinity schools for ministers and school teachers. Some added medicine and law.
It was World War II and the GI Bill that changed colleges and universities into job training for the Deplorables - for better or worse.
The Ivy schools still have some smart students but DEI has really destroyed their education standards
The biggest problem is that really outstanding white and Asian students, especially males, are being systematically barred from entry to our “ elite” Universities
At Stanford, white males make up only about 8 % of incoming freshman students which is way low. Asian men are also getting screwed
This is a huge problem because white and Asian males are some of the top talent in science and engineering
Add in the fact that our self proclaimed elite schools are turning out some students who are really incapable of working in a demanding job position
Smart tech companies are looking to recruit the top talent that used to gravitate towards our elite universities but are now being passed over for DEI admits and are educating them about in a real world environment
This is a huge win for all concerned
The reality is that grads of our elite schools have been entitled, spoiled and not that well prepared
So there were no doctors or lawyers before the “colleges” began offering those programs? And it’s been for the worse, particularly since the “college is needed for everything” push of the 80’s and 90’s.
Simpler fix. Don’t hire anyone with a “liberal arts” degree. No exceptions.
The entire program was corrupted decades ago. It is not worth your time to retrain.
Oh, and use the same criteria to clean out present staff.
This has been a problem for a while (15+ years)
the Universities used a ‘diversity score’ to weed out white and oriental males, giving then 0/20 points. this meant their applications started at 80% and went down from there.
the result, as per a 2019 NY Post story, 50% of the people on the top 200 campuses wouldn’t be there if grades and test scores were the sole factor of getting in.
Beyond admittance shenanigans, those graduating in computer science / IT were woefully prepared to become junior software developers. As such, the H-1bs looked more promising especially when they were much cheaper.
The combination has devastated the next generation of American tech workers putting us on the back foot without relying on foreign ‘support’
Almost like a planned attack.
One step closer to the cyberpunk zaibatsu concept. They’re already supranational, transitional in whether they or countries have operational control, and now have brand-loyal trainees locked in.
All that’s missing are independent armed forces and retributive anti-hacking (aka “ICE”) methods.
(Musk is already on the way to the space-based arcology/AI hub a la Tessier-Ashpool and Wintermute)
“The company’s four-month fellowship begins with a five-week crash course in Western civilization — studying philosophers like Aristotle and heroes like Churchill”
Wow! That’s shocking.
Back 30 years ago, I thought Intel should do this.
They had the room to setup housing and they brain power to teach classes.
Intel’s biggest flaw was in order to advance, you HAD to move into management.
They could have easily moved them into teaching the next generation of Material Science and semiconductor design.
Many academic institutions have become political cesspools.
Doctors were intially teachers of religion until the term was later applied to surgeons and medical practicioners. They were trained in apprenticeships and only later trained in medical schools.
In the United States, lawyers studied in clerkships. Other than the College of William and Mary, or Harvard College, law colleges were not founded until much later.
Divinity, teaching, law, and medical schools merged together in more recent history, along with math, science, and engineering.
If not for the GI Bill, and the outlawing of intelligence tests on the grounds of discrimination, few would attend college nor need to.
Industry jumped at the chance to get the taxpayers through Uncle Sam, and the individuals themselves to assume the time and cost of training, but it's gotten progressively worse over decades.
One band-aid to cover the graduation knowledge gap for colleges and universities has been to require internships of their students, especially medicine, law, and teaching. Conferring, in part, a degree on learning from apprenticeships.
The big schools put their stupid ideology ahead of who they are and what they were.
Newspapers, magazines, universities, news organizations, poll companies, the medical community, government, the military are all spouting ideology shaped crapola for me until I know better. No hyperbole. Zero.
Yes
Ivy Leagues need not get away with saying for all the money spent on my education I must be right about everything so there.
"If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war." -A Nation at Risk report (1983)
And it's gotten far worse since then, while apart from the homeschool community and some private schools the nation just went along with it.
