Labour’s front-runner to take on Zack Polanski at the by-election in Sir Keir Starmer’s constituency is a Somali former child refugee, The Telegraph understands.
Sagal Abdi-Wali, who runs Camden council and was previously chairman of Sir Keir’s Constituency Labour Party, is understood to be considering a run for Parliament after the former prime minister announced he would stand down.
Ms Abdi-Wali came to the UK as a child refugee from Somalia in the early 1990s, and has said she has been a party supporter “as long as I can remember”. She was first elected as a Labour councillor in 2022 and is seen locally as an ally of Sir Keir.
She was appointed leader of Camden council after the local elections on May 7, when she pledged to “work day and night to fight for social justice and to deliver meaningful change”.
Ms Abdi-Wali has spoken of her experiences when her family moved to London in the early 1990s to escape civil war and famine.
