Carney says Trump’s demands would dismantle Canadian auto industry as Ford warns US could be cut off

TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday that U.S. trade demands confirmed Canada's fears that U.S. President Donald Trump was seeking to dismantle its auto industry, as Trump threatened new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel, and as Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned Canada could cut off electricity and critical minerals to the United States.

Carney said Canada remained willing to negotiate, but only if Washington approached the talks as a partnership between sovereign countries. He said "an attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States" is "not something we're going to accept."

Ford, speaking in an interview with The Associated Press, said Trump has underestimated Canadians' willingness to endure economic pain rather than give in to U.S. pressure.

"He underestimates Canada. We're all in," Ford said. "Up here, we're at a fever pitch, everyone's in for an economic war. They know they're going to have to sacrifice."

The dude's delusional.

When the hammer hits it'll be AT LEAST 20% of the Canadian economy and it will bankrupt them.

As for the power issue, we can reroute some of the us US grid...but they should be aware it's a national security issue for us and if necessary we will send the US Army to restore it.

It's not just Carney - all of Canada's provincial leadership seems to be delusional as well. This a**hat Doug Ford has been mouthing off since last year.

Here’s the key issue: Canada was bringing in Chinese steel and aluminum and selling it as Canadian steel to help China avoid tariffs When told to knock it off, they refused. This is why the trade deal collapsed We cannot allow China to build a proxy state on our border

“an attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States” is “not something we’re going to accept.”

They are, in fact a subsidiary of the US and always have been.

It’s time they relearned that fact.

Cut them off from the US dollar. Completely close the border. Notify them that the Monroe Doctrine applies to them too, and we intend to enforce it.

So that is the Canadian response to tariff negotiations? We aren't the Canadian truckers, Doug Ford.

Canada does not seem to want to make any concessions. They want to keep trans-shipping Chinese metals. They want to keep their tariff regime in dairy and farm products. They want to allow provinces to continue to impose their own barriers to trade. Have they offered a concession on anything?

From what I’ve seen, virtually all crude oil from Alberta to the eastern provinces flow through the United States.

Large parts of Eastern Michigan are powered through a Canadian Hydroelectric generating station in Sarnia, Ontario.

Gee Carney, do you really want to play that game? We have plenty of power plants.

Quebec hasn’t drilled a new oil well in at least fifteen years.

Can’t say I oppose “their” auto industry relocating here.

I’m unaware of any Canadian car company.

YouTube from JD Vance:

This video features U.S. Vice President JD Vance speaking at a defense manufacturing facility (CompoTech) in Brewer, Maine. The primary focus of his remarks is trade policy, specifically regarding the relationship between the United States and Canada.

Key takeaways include:

Critique of Canadian Trade Policy: Vance expresses strong dissatisfaction with current trade practices with Canada, labeling them and China as having the “two worst” trade policies globally (0:43). He highlights a significant disparity in dairy trade, noting that Canadian dairy imports into the U.S. face 0% tariffs, while American dairy products exported to Canada can face tariffs as high as 250% (1:58-2:35).
Backdoor for Chinese Goods: Vance alleges that Canada allows its market to be used as a “backdoor” for Chinese goods, which he argues are treated more favorably than products coming from Maine (2:47-2:56).
Defense and Sovereignty: Vance mentions that Canada has underinvested in its military and relies on the “umbrella of protection” provided by the United States (1:11-1:19).
Negotiation Status: He confirms that negotiations are ongoing and emphasizes that the current administration is committed to pushing back against what they view as unfair trade practices to secure a “fair deal” for Maine farmers and businesses (0:29-0:48, 2:40-3:00).

Too bad!!!! Canada has effectively frozen out American timber and dairy products with insane tariffs for years. Enjoy a dose of your own medicine.

Carney and Ford will sacrifice everyone to cling to power, but they won't risk anything personally. Big time statesmen/heroes. What a joke.

You are 100% correct.

When you finally realize who this really applies to, it will be too late.

Idiots on this thread think Trump’s mafia bully bullshit is going to work.

How has it worked in Iran? You’re all in a death cult but too stupid to realize it.
