The DSA Has Slogans, but Isn’t Interested in Policies
NRO ^ | 11 August 2026 | Jim Geraghty

All Talk and No Substance
Apparently, nothing is quite so devastating to the Democratic Socialists of America as simply and directly asking them, specifically, what policies they want to see enacted if their candidates win office.

The New Yorker’s David Remnick interviewed DSA co-chair Megan Romer Friday. It did not go well for Romer. You can watch the video here; notice Remnick did not ask her about algebra or obscure regulation details or historical dates. He simply asked her to go beyond the slogans and to articulate specific policies. And on issue after issue, she simply couldn’t:

Romer: But we do believe in taxing the hell out of millionaires, yeah, absolutely.

Remnick: Well, what does ‘taxing the hell out of them’ mean?

Romer: Uh, yeah, you know, again, I don’t have like a solid . . . but I think—

Remnick: But, shouldn’t you?

Romer: Um . . .

Remnick: I mean, if you’re the co-chair—

Romer: That’s a good question.

Remnick: If you’re the co-chair of the DSA, shouldn’t you be more specific than just taxing the hell out of something? What exactly do you mean?

Romer: So again, it’s democracy, right? And we have to look at what we need to spend and what we need. We don’t want to depend on the existence of millionaires because that means people are still getting exploited. So, yeah, we need to look at what we need to pay for in the interim, what sort of tax base we need for that to happen, and build from there.

The interview moved on to “prison abolition.”

Remnick: What does prison abolition mean to you?

Romer: So, again, let’s start from first principles, right? What do we need? We need safety,

Remnick: Let’s not begin from principles. Let’s begin from what is to be done, to use a Leninist phrase.

Romer: We need community safety. We need people to be safe. We need people to be able to live their lives without fear of being assaulted, without fear of being robbed, without fear of violence. What communities do we know are the safest? It’s not communities with cops on every corner, it’s communities that have good schools, good jobs, good park systems, good recreation for their teenagers, things like that.

Having asserted that “good park systems” make the public safer and cops do not, Romer never got around to specifying what prison abolition meant.

Politics means having to deal with the opposition. If they ever get in charge they will see that there IS no opposition.

Good Lord. This feels like it should be a slam dunk for the Republicans
just before midterms.

The issue is never the issue, the issue is always the revolution.

The surprise the Commies didn't count on is that the American proletariat is fine with ripping their limb off and beating them with it.

Totally wrong! They certainly have policies and know exactly what they are. Whats for sure is they want as few ppl to know them as possible. Their policies would repulse all exc the loons. It’s typical democrat in that regard.

They really don’t need policies. In the idiocracy that is America, “Eat The Rich” is all they need.

They’re definitely interested in policies. We just have to vote them in to find out what they are.

Actually, just a cringe worthy tik tok ad is all they need to get elected.

You have to elect the communists to find out what’s in the communists’ agenda (paraphrasing Nancy Pelosi).

Well, that’s Alinsky. Identify a target, press the target and don’t let up. Bear in mind, though, that Alinsky was a tactician and he was advocating the tactics that had worked for him in practice. Just what his end goal was, isn’t entirely clear. It was all about the tricks and tactics.

Being the master tactician-in-charge allows one--without accountability--to have others kowtow and do whatever is deemed desirable, ad hoc.

The unplanned, dictatorial nature at work is almost certainly why end goals would appear unclear.

They just want unlimited coercive power to make things better, or something.

The title, Democratic Socialists of America, needs to disappear from the American landscape.

Firs of all, there is nothing democratic about socialism and especially about their ultimate goal of communism.

The title SOILS the good name of ‘America’. Let’s clean it up and just make it ‘Democratic Socialists’, but even better, would be Socialists, and way better is ‘Bogus and Dumb Party’. Nonsensical Party is also better for the doofuses.

Considering Alynsky, It seemed pretty clear to me. He wanted power. He craved power. He though everything came and went with power.

He never considered how things were made, what made society work, what created a good society and what made a bad society.

As with most leftists, power over others was everything.

Such was my interpretation.

“They really don’t need policies. In the idiocracy that is America, “Eat The Rich” is all they need.”
____________________________________________________________

This is their own description of their efforts from the website:

“Capitalism is a system designed by the owning class to exploit the rest of us for their own profit. We must replace it with democratic socialism, a system where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, neighborhoods, and society.

We believe there are many avenues that feed into the democratic road to socialism. Our vision pushes further than historic social democracy and leaves behind authoritarian visions of socialism in the dustbin of history.

We want a democracy that creates space for us all to flourish not just survive and answers the fundamental questions of our lives with the input of all. We want to collectively own the key economic drivers that dominate our lives, such as energy production and transportation. We want the multiracial working class united in solidarity instead of divided by fear. We want to win “radical” reforms like single-payer Medicare for All, defunding the police/refunding communities, the Green New Deal, and more as a transition to a freer, more just life.

We want a democracy powered by everyday people. The capitalist class tells us we are powerless, but together we can take back control.”

The DSA may have a ditzy spokesperson, but they do have real policies.

Policies they cannot openly espouse just yet, though you can catch a hint from their slogans perhaps.

And while they do lie a lot, if they say they are your enemy, you'd better believe them.
