A Syrian court has sentenced ousted president Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia after convicting him of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the country's civil war.
BBC reports that Assad fled Syria for Moscow with his family in December 2024 after his regime was overthrown, bringing an end to his family's more than five-decade rule over the country. He has remained in Russia since then, and it is unclear whether Syria's new authorities will be able to secure his extradition.
The death sentence marks the latest legal action against Assad by Syria's new leadership. An arrest warrant was issued against him in December 2024 on charges including murder and torture.

Assad, who is living in exile in Russia....
The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus found Assad guilty of premeditated murder and crimes against humanity, while Atef Najib, his cousin and former political security chief in the southern province of Daraa, was convicted of premeditated murder and torture.
Syrian prosecutors had also sought to convict Bashar al-Assad’s brother Maher al-Assad of murder, torture, arbitrary detention and wasting public funds, and had requested the death penalty for him as well.
Al Assad’s sin was he was aligned with the Russians and not allowing a pipeline to Europe. Assad protected women’s rights, the antiquities, Christians and other minorities and even the queer from the Sunni crazies. But he stood in the way.
Its weird to me that ISIS, and the planned muslim-migrant invasion of Europe, all started with Obama’s attempts to overthrow Assad.
Now that we have installed islamists in Damascus, and have slaughtered or forced out most of the Christian population of the Levant, what else have we achieved?
A country now ruled by a effing US endorsed and praised headchopper, described by our President as highly capable and respected.

Pot calling the kettle black. It’s laughable to see a government run by a one-time Al Quaeda operative (Al Sharaa) complaining about anyone else’s “human rights” record. In any sane system Al Sharaa would have been sentenced to death as well, rather than being treated as a legitimate head of state.
First name of accused is Maher. Bill’s family name is Maher. If Bill is Jewish, the family name might be Hebrew for “quick”.
It’s all window dressing for “we’re in power now, so we got to eliminate the old regime.” Sort of like what the Bidenistas tried to do to Trump, for the same reason, albeit without any death sentences.
I recently watched the movie Snowden(for the first time). I came away conflicted. Which I suspect is the point of the movie.
Was he a traitor or a whistleblower/hero?

It sure seemed like the movie wanted you to support his actions.

I’ve heard him in interview. Very intelligent and well-spoken. He makes a good case for himself. I don’t know all the facts, and I haven’t heard the government’s side of the argument. But I’m inclined to agree with him that he did what had to be done. Only inclined, because, as I say, I haven’t heard the counter arguments and facts.
His rivals, however, Putin makes sure to kill.
