The New York Attorney General’s Office has directed the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and 11 other law enforcement agencies to end agreements that allow local officers to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Chief Deputy Attorney General for Social Justice Meghan Faux informed Sheriff James Allard that new provisions in the state budget prohibit local governments and police agencies from entering, renewing or extending agreements under which their employees perform immigration enforcement duties. The legislation, called the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, affects Steuben County’s agreement with ICE under Section 287(g) of the federal Immigration and Nationality Act. The program allows ICE to authorize state and local officers to perform certain federal immigration functions.
Under the new state law, local officers may not arrest someone based on a civil ICE warrant or detainer request. They are also prohibited from stopping and questioning people based on suspicion that they lack lawful immigration status.
Existing ICE agreements will be considered inconsistent with state law and become void and unenforceable Aug. 25, according to the Attorney General’s Office. That would prohibit the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office from carrying out duties assigned by ICE under its current agreement.
The Attorney General’s Office demanded a written response confirming compliance and proof that the agreement has been terminated by 5 p.m. Aug. 14.
Other agencies receiving letters included the Nassau County police and sheriff’s departments; the Madison, Niagara, Cattaraugus, Broome, Rensselaer and Otsego county sheriff’s offices; and police departments in Mohawk, Camden and Allegany.

For the most part, Sheriffs are \elected\ official that will operate at the will of the (county) populace.
So will said ‘populace’ stand behind their Sheriff?

I don’t expect my local police to be tyrannical, but I have informed my Sheriff that I will contact him if I fear for my safety.

Steuben is a very rural county in Western NY, bordering Pennsylvania
It probably went for Trump 80-20 in last election.

Trump should ask each Mayor in this country if they want Federal agents in their city. If NO, announce that no agents will enter except federal buildings security. Illegals, gang members, rapists, robbers will know they will be safe there.

I thought state governments couldn’t impair contracts.
What’s to stop the state from say outlawing pension payouts to retired local law enforcement officers and school district teachers?
I think New York is wrong in refusing to aid immigration officials. However they are not legally obligated to do so. What I wonder is if New York state has home rule and whether that means municipalities can decide to cooperate with immigration efforts. I believe since the sheriff is a constitutional (as in state constitution) office the state does have the authority to tell them to suspend cooperation with immigration enforcement. They can’t however tell them to suspend arresting illegal immigrants on other crimes.
New York state would rather have the blood of their citizens flowing in the street than lose the 10 votes each illegal immigrant will cast in the ruling class’ favor.
