More than 41,000 people woke up without power to their homes all across the Philadelphia region on Sunday, officials said. But that number has lowered substantially as the day has gone on.

Following storms that interrupted Saturday evening's "One Philly: Unity Concert for America" on the Ben Franklin Parkway, electricity providers across the region were reporting outages all across their systems.

The storms caused damage in communities all across the region and interrupted or caused cancelations to July 4th events, as well.

The worst thing about power outages for struggling households is not the lack of light or even air conditioning, but the spoiling of all the food in the freezer/refrigerator if it goes on too long. Most units will stay cold for a few hours, but after that, it’s food poisoning city. And the costs to replace.

Cities everywhere spend every cent on political favors instead of saving for a rainy day and investing in emergency equipment like generators or hydropower.

After a 4 day power outage in 2004 and the loss of >$1500 in food I decided it was time to invest in a 15kw propane generator.

Good call. I was lucky the time it happened to me—there was snow on the groung and sub-freezing temperatures, so I could put my frozen crabcakes, etc outside under metal crates to foil the crittters. But my neighbors down the street didn’t think of that and lost all the veggies and fruits they had grown that year.
