California Democratic Congresswoman Judy Chu got into a vicious back-and-forth over the Iran war with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Thursday — but was caught flat-footed when asked who the president was during World War I.
At a House Ways and Means Committee hearing to discuss the Trump administration’s fiscal policies, Chu tried to grill Bessent on a past remark by the Republican president, suggesting he wasn’t factoring in the financial situations of US citizens during negotiations to end the war.
“Do you agree with President Trump that you also do not care about Americans’ financial situations?” Chu asked, while a staffer held a sign claiming price increases during the US war with Iran.
Bessent then responded with a simple question to Chu: “Who was the president during World War I?”
Chu seemed caught off guard and stayed silent for a moment. “Are you refusing to answer to my question?” she asked in return.
Bessent said he wasn’t and then repeated his question.
“I don’t know,” the congresswoman admitted.
The two then start speaking over each other as Bessent attempted to explain why he asked that question.
Bessent brought up Woodrow Wilson, he said, because much like the US entry into World War I, the Trump administration’s actions are motivated by long-term security.
In fact, Trump had explained to Fox News days after his remark that with negotiations, his sole focus is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“I can tell you, Americans’ financial situation would be devastated if Iran got a nuclear weapon and there was a permanent, permanent shutdown of the flow of energy out of the Middle East,” Bessent said.

I still call him ‘ World War Wilson ‘ for his breaking his promise to keep America out of WW1.
Somehow, Bessent knew that Ms Chu did not know that fact about our history. I’ve never heard her speak, but perhaps she has a strong Chinese accent. That was a clue.
I’m glad he respectfully Rocked Her Boat. He didn’t overdo it either, but his point of Clueless Dems was solidly made.
Trump has done great things for sealing the border and encouraging domestic industry, but he's fumbling the ball in Iran. Also, the thing with the half million Chicom student/spies is a disaster.
Other than that...
One could call him a lot of things, none of them good.
Wilson was a catastrophic President.
Brain dead for the last two years of his Presidency. His wife ran the country.
Wilson first commie president of the federal states racist and typical dump academic. bad example of federal policy.
Did you see Bissent savage that idiot Wyden from Oregon the other day??? It was a wow moment!!!
Can we ask her who was president during the Civil War or WWII? What presidents does she know?
All old white guys are the same.
Who was president during the Biden administration?
Does anyone really know?
One wonders about what would have happened in WWI if the USA did not enter it? WWII was necessary.
Once I was at an event where Representative Mike Honda was speaking. (His seat is now held by Ro Khanna.) In the course of his speech, he accidentally revealed he thought the U.S. fought Russia in WWII. This is even worse when you consider he was born in internment, because that’s where his Japanese-born parents were.
I am wrong. His grandparents were born in Japan, but not his parents. But he was born in internment.
I would contest the premise of the headline. Have 10th graders heard of WWI? Do they have any idea when it occurred? Not to all.
Placed in internment by a Democrat.
I’m still trying to figure out who was President during World War Eleven.
Possibly not.
But they know World War Eleven was really bad…
One word: Don’t try to go toe to toe with Scott.
