Virginia Dem Gov Spanberger signs bill banning assault weapons, NRA immediately files lawsuit

The National Rifle Association is suing Virginia Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger for her signing of a measure to make illegal the buying, selling, importing, manufacturing and/or the transfer of assault weapons in the state.

The NRA filed lawsuits in both federal and state courts, arguing the law is unconstitutional.

Supporters argue the legislation removes "weapons of war" from the streets, making Virginia safer from violence, but opponents argue the law punishes law-abiding citizens, WRIC reported.

“As promised, we are taking Abigail Spanberger to court," the NRA, the Second Amendment rights group said in a statement.

"Throughout the legislative session, the NRA and our members fought Richmond’s radical gun control package tooth and nail. We made it clear that this extreme anti-gun proposal, which bans the new purchase of commonly owned firearms and standard capacity magazines in the Commonwealth, is a blatant violation of Second Amendment rights and an affront to landmark Supreme Court cases."

I wonder if Virginia republicans realize yet what a mistake they made last fall in crossing over to vote for "moderate" Spanberger?

It is also against the Virginia State Constitution’s declaration of “Shall Not Be Infringed”.

SCOTUS is going to have to address this issue at some point.

Right now there is two cases on point at SCOTUS that has been relisted.

National Association for Gun Rights v Lamont

Question Presented

Whether a ban on the possession of AR-15-style rifles and firearm magazines with a capacity in excess of 10 rounds violates the Second Amendment.

and

Viramontes v Cook County

Question Presented

Whether the Second and 14th Amendments guarantee the right to possess AR-15 platform and similar semiautomatic rifles.

I see that both those cases were DISTRIBUTED for conference on 5/14/2026, just yesterday. So that’s good.

Gun confiscation in any country is bad.

In a US rule by Dems in the near future, with total surveillance by the government, ban on social media and internet free speech, ban on gas cars and gas stations, a packed leftist Supreme Court upholding leftist judges’ rulings, 2 more Dem states in DC and PR, release of prisoners and other criminal given soft on crime sentences without bail requirement, wide open borders and wide open no ID voting-—it would mean catastrophe.

Please name me some weapons produced since the mid 1800’s that haven’t been used in wars.

Yep. Our Second Amendment rights are more important than ever. If we lose them then our country is definitely gone. Look at England if you want an example. The people have no recourse.

For these easy to defeat suits, there should be monetary remedy included to cover the cost of the lawsuit and punitive damages for any citizen impacted.

What's an assault weapon? Where did that definition come from? Where's the details on what defines an "assault weapon"? Who gets to decide that? My leather belt is assault weapon. So is my steel-toed right boot.

Don't accept language that's been stuffed into your head by the people that wish to do you harm.

Notice the troubling trend. Impressionable voters believe the lies in the campaign.

1) In my state of Michigan, that ugly shrew Elissa Slotkin was elected US Senator after a deliberately deceptive saturation TV and radio ad campaign which never said she was a Democrat (!) and just talked about how bad problems for people are-—not that she would be one of the traitors with Mark Kelly and would push socialism.

2) Spanberger deliberately lied about being a an old fashioned moderate who would cool down the unrest in politics, then immediately pushed socialism upheaval policies.

3) Yesterday’s Jim Jordan questioning of Descano:
“During a tense House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on May 14, 2026, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano defended his office’s policies against accusations of being soft on crime, particularly regarding undocumented immigrants. When questioned by Rep. Jim Jordan about removing campaign language that promised to consider immigration consequences in charging decisions, Descano argued that people should understand the difference between a “campaign statement” and “actual office policy”.

All weapons are assault weapons. A rock is an assault weapon. Even a defensive implement...a shield, a helmet, is an assault weapon. Therefore, there should be a law against assault....oh wait...
