Let’s make a deal – or not.
Gov. Kathy Hochul bungled the announcement of a deal on New York’s long-delayed budget Thursday — as state Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie shot down her claims that top Democrats reached an agreement.
The budget drama unfolded after Hochul announced the supposed agreement at 9 a.m., releasing the spending plan’s top lines.
Roughly two hours later, however, Heastie effectively called the governor a liar.
“There’s no budget deal. There’s no deal,” the Bronx Democrat said.
“I’m not conferencing anything else until I know what the financial picture is.”
Heastie said he walked out of a high-profile leaders’ meeting last night without an agreement.
The governor has been itching to strike a deal as the state blew past an April Fools’ Day deadline to pass the budget.
She had previously planned to announce the handshake Wednesday, having staff set up the Red Room in the state Capitol for the unveiling, but ultimately canned the rollout.
Hochul’s claim to have struck a deal – and seemingly attempt to strong-arm the legislature – drew a rare show of bipartisan agreement from lawmakers.
“I would actually thank the speaker for standing up for the legislature in this process,” Assembly Minority Leader Ed Ra (R-Nassau) told reporters.
“No you didn’t reach an agreement,” state Sen. Jabari Brisport (D-Brooklyn) posted to Hochul on X. “You do this every year. Please stop.”
The deal that Hochul announced came with few details and as New York City’s fresh-faced Mayor Zohran Mamdani has begged the governor for more money to help fill what he has claimed is a $5.4 billion budget shortfall.

LOLOLOLOL Good one
State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie's handler and state Senator Jabari Brisport's handler haven't gotten the message yet to pass along to them.
The State of New York has become so reliant on stock market-based revenue that it can’t reliably budget.
