The Postal Service has informed the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) of its intention to temporarily suspend its employer’s contributions for the defined benefit portion of the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) to conserve cash and preserve liquidity due to its ongoing, severe financial crisis.

Most likely in the short term.
In the long term, it has something to do with unions.
That and 99.9% of deliveries are below-cost junk mail.
I worked for a federal contractor in the 80s who suspended payments to employee 401 (k) plans. They were eventually put out of business by the IRS.
Doubt that will happen here.
Time to privatize USPS. Just like the UK and Germany did to their postal services. Denmark shut down theirs in total.
I’d still contribute when it’s tax free then find another employer.
Who else gets a golden pension plan outside the gummit.
This is the defined benefit (traditional pension plan) portion through OPM, not the defined contribution TSP portion of the retirement program.
And the only way it won't impact employees is if the taxpayers make up the difference.
Several weeks back, I sent an important Certified Letter to an attorney. The USPS lost it. Even though I have lived in this house 6 years, my local post office can’t get it in their computer which causes all sorts of delivery problems.
Back in 1775, when the “Postal Service” was established, it made some sense. Today it does not. After 400 years, Denmark just abolished their postal service as did Guatemala. It’s time the US did the same thing.
One of the things I like about USPS is that it has federal law enforcement clout behind it. Scandalously managed, bad union, but very few are willing to mess with the mail, cause it brings federal charges
If they were forward looking, they might want to consider running secure e-mail, or secure e-document transfer services. Very few would mess with that. Wouldn’t have to worry much about hackers getting into your e-mail, or lifting your credit card numbers or passwords ..govt. surveillance would be a concern, but the govt. can hack into private accounts already...they should expand their delivery of online merchandise also. Their mail delivery vehicles need to be downsized for future energy saving.

If they did away with the USPS, the number of mail-in votes would come to a trickle. Hence the reason, they will never get rid of it.
Without the USPS contributions to the FERS, the system will become insolvent really fast.
The accounting of the USPS retirement fund requires a higher payment than any other federal employee. Because there are so many employees, they float the system with tons of cash. If that is changed—making contributions the same as say, the Social Security System or the FAA system, there would not be enough cash coming into to pay out ALL of the retirees.
This has been going on for at least 30 years, probably longer.
This is what happens when EVERYONE works for the government directly or indirectly through some support function. And this is what happens when the government has great retirement benefits. There are plenty of postal workers and other govt employees retiring in their mid 50s with wonderful health insurance and COLAs.
I don’t begrudge them their retirements because that is the deal they got when they signed up. But, we either need to change it going forward or this is going to blow up on them.
In some countries the post office is also the place where people do banking with their national banks.
Twice in the last month, no mail was delivered on a regular mail days - neither was a holiday.
Didn’t see the mailman or truck (my dogs let me know each and every day) - asked neighbors and they said they hadn’t received any mail on those days either.
Looks like they may be cutting back already.

In a few years SSA, PERS, FERS and other US responsivities will be defaulted on. It will be a very different USA in ten years, if it still exists. :-(
In the early 2000’s, I worked for a Fortune 500 company that switched from Defined Benefit to Defined Contribution. Their defined contribution was just more or less a 2nd 401K with the same mutual funds to contribute to that were in our primary 401K. It didn’t bother me but it is no surprise our lethargic nonresponsive government is still trying to operate with this type of system.
I hate the USA defaulting in ten years.
Delivery should be a on odd or even day schedule.
One neighborhood is delivered on even days and another neighborhood is delivered on odd days. Monday through Saturday with no Sunday delivery.
This will allow more efficiency for the postal workers during delivery.
