More than 3,500 U.S. Troops arrive in Middle East as Iran war strikes intensify

More than 3,500 U.S. troops, including the USS Tripoli with about 2,500 Marines, arrived in the Middle East, officials announced Saturday, as strikes in the Iran war intensified.

The U.S. Central Command said in a social media post that the USS Tripoli, which serves as the flagship for the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group / 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, arrived in its area of responsibility.

Central Command said that in addition to the Marines, the Tripoli also brings transport and strike fighter aircraft, as well as amphibious assault assets to the region. The USS Boxer and two other ships, along with another Marine Expeditionary Unit, have also been ordered to the region from San Diego.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday the United States can meet its objectives "without any ground troops." But he also said President Trump "has to be prepared for multiple contingencies" and that American forces are available "to give the president maximum optionality and maximum, opportunity to adjust to contingencies should they emerge."

Mr. Trump has given Iran until April 6 to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran says it has not engaged in any negotiations.

Mostly to keep the IRGC down so the Iranians can finish the job.

The uprising did not happen. 95 million people in that population in 95% of them are Shiite and there was no uprising and if you want that to change it will have to kill almost all of them.

Take a poll. See what sort of support you can get for killing oh 80 million people. You’d never win another election.

I get the sense that many of Iranian Shiites are not that “religious”, and are because the basically have to claim to be to not be harassed, jailed, or killed by current power structure.

If that yoke of control is removed rhat may change

Sorry, I’m not your straw-man for that ridiculous assertion. Make your black/white-thinking argument to someone else.

Additionally if support for regime and its actions were so strong do you need to recruit 12 year olds?

Lack of protests during active bombing campaign seems logical

They haven’t started the job.

“95 million people in that population in 95% of them are Shiite . . .”

Iran has a history of being secular and somewhat modern.

Things have changed since 1979. For some reason Iranians don’t like for government thugs to machine gun their sons and daughters in the streets.

Or to hang their Olympians.

There have been acts of guerilla attacks, but they are isolated.

Any idea how far down the IRGC has been beaten? I don't, but I think not yet far enough. At some point though, the Iranians have to rise up and throw out the Ayatollahs if they want to be anywhere close to free.

American troops are not dying in great numbers. So far, perhaps a dozen or so.

The operation is going almost flawless. It couldn’t have been done better.

I did not go to the article. But I find it interesting that five or six paragraphs into the story, they do not talk about what has “intensified.” We did 7,000 sorties in three weeks. I am pretty sure that is about “intense” as it gets. I cannot imagine there are any “significant” targets left.

Obviously using ground troops changes the picture, but the drama-words used in headlines these days are a cross between funny and pathetic.

Hey genius, 3,000 U.S. troops are nowhere near enough to invade Iran. If anything ground-related happens, it will be only to take Karg Island.

The issue is the same as it has been since 1980: The population has no way to “fight back.” When the regime has no problem machine gunning protesters…you are not going to protest very much. If there was an ability to shoot back…then the streets would be flooded.

If anyone ever needed an example of what the second amendment works…Iran is your answer.

“The operation is going almost flawless” can only be deemed accurately using long term battlefield and political successes in relation to cost verses benefit analyses. Iraq and Afghan are long-term failures in spite of short-term operational engagements that were successful.

Iran isn't even close to giving up; the hubris is off the charts here and the time frame is slowly closing in because Congress will shut-off the resources in a couple of months.

The US got rid of the two secular leaders (Hussein/Assad) in the Middle-East and replaced them with Ishmael LARPing worshipers. What makes you think they would install a secular Persian gov. given the chance?
