Soldiers and members of the Basij militia stationed in several districts of Tehran have moved to mosques. Additionally, Iranian special forces and police moved – according to witnesses – to the mortuary in the city of Karaj, located near Tehran.
Witnesses also reported that members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and border guards in the western part of Iran, neighboring Iraq and Turkey are sheltering in mosques. In such border towns as Paveh, Mariwan, Bane and Sardasht, Muslim temples were turned into outposts, among others.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network reported that on the Turkish-Iranian border, members of the IRGC and border guards operating from mosques warned residents to under no circumstances did they approach the border zone threatening to open fire on anyone near the border.
And a few days ago, residents of Kazerun in southwestern Iran informed Iranwire that the barracks of the Chamran and Imam Sajjad brigades subordinated to the IRGC were evacuated and moved to urban recreation areas.
Why are Iranian soldiers moving to mosques?
Which soldier groups left their posts?
Where are the mosques they are moving to?
What are the consequences of the actions of the Iranian armed forces for the civilian population?
The entry of Iranian armed forces into mosques means that they create “living shields” from the civilian population, which are intended to protect them from attacks by the US and Israel, the humanitarian organization said in its report.
