Was it a warship? The reportage is so nebulous it wasn’t clear to me that it was.

Tough luck for the IRGC Navy Ship.
Answering my own question. Per Iranian news services it was the IRIS Dena:
“IRIS Dena 75 (Persian : ناوشکن دنا) was a Moudge-class frigate in the Southern Fleet of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, named after Mount Dena. On 4 March 2026, it sank in international waters near the southern coast of Sri Lanka.”

It was a baby milk factory ship.
A hunting we well go.
I believe North Korea torpedoed a South Korean destroyer in the 90s?
If true, that would be the first kill for the Silent Service since WWII.
It was a yellow submarine.
What would an Iranian warship (post #4) be doing off the coast of Sri Lanka? That’s a long way from home.
My only guess is that it was on the way to attack the British base at Diego Garcia. And that’s probably not a very good guess.
What was an Iranian warship doing way over there anyways while the homeland is being pummeled? Hiding?
You were typing it while I was thinking it. Good job.
Participating in exercises with India
😉👍

Tally ho!

Whose sub?
What was the ship?
Like no information here.
Baby milk factory frigate with:
Anti-ship missiles: 4 × Qader anti-ship missiles (derived from the Chinese C-802/Noor series).
Surface-to-air missiles: 4 × Sayad-2 (or Mehrab) naval surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), with a reported capability to engage multiple targets simultaneously.
Main gun: 1 × 76 mm Fajr-27 dual-purpose rapid-fire naval gun.
Anti-aircraft cannons: 1 × 40 mm Fath-40 AA cannon (a Bofors copy) and 2 × 20 mm Oerlikon cannons.
Anti-submarine warfare: 2 × triple 324 mm light torpedo launchers.
Electronic warfare: 2 × 8-tube chaff launchers and an Asr 3D PESA long-range radar for air and surface surveillance, with a 300 km detection range.
I recall that the Nork ship was a semi-submersible so not a true submarine.
“What would an Iranian warship (post #4) be doing off the coast of Sri Lanka? That’s a long way from home”
Supposedly the ship had participating in some war games (India?) and was heading home which makes no sense. What home? Major blunder heading into international waters.
Nope. The hand drawn sign on cardboard that say “ Baby milk factory” negates all that.
